Becks opens his mouth, looking guilty, so I decide to save him. “Hormones, Max. Becket was just being a good brother, and it got me hormonal. Be prepared because according to all of the books I read this weekend, they’re going to get worse.”
Max runs his fingers through his perfectly styled dirty blonde hair, and I watch the fear from earlier begin to subside. “Okay, Scarlet. Bring Cade to the house for dinner soon then.”
“Ahh… that would be a no, Max. You’re not Dad, and I’m not a child. We’re not even together like that, and you’re not going to interrogate him. Let me work through this without any interference from you guys, okay? Give me time.” I sit down and wait for them to get the hint, but these two aren’t taking it. “I’ve got work to do, guys.”
“That’s my cue.” Becks leaves the office, and Max sits down and hands me the folder he’s holding.
“Can you stay late and meet with Will Brenner and me tonight? He’s coming in at six.”
Guess I’m cancelling my dinner with Cade.
And now I need to decide if the tightening in my chest is disappointment at that thought or heartburn.
