They weren’t in the danger zone yet, but they also weren’t out of it either. They were in a comfortable, not so comfortable, bind. With their need for each other building, they were spiraling toward a potential violent mating. There was no way either of them could deny each other. Not for long.

After cutting into his pancakes, he shoved a large chunk into his mouth and chewed. He had to stay calm.

He didn’t want Poppy to panic. Seeing Greg and Poppy together wasn’t good for him.

“So, what are you doing after breakfast?” Klaus asked.

“I was hoping to spend the day with Poppy.” Greg offered her a warm smile, and Klaus had to clench his hand into a fist to calm himself. “Are you okay?” he asked.

“Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Swallowed a large lump.”I’m stopping myself from going to war with your pack, which would be so easy, and I could pound your fucking face in. If you look at my mate again, I’m going to kill you.

He didn’t know where these thoughts and feelings were coming from.

“Son, this is dangerous. You should have come to me. How irresponsible can you be?”

“Dad, it is fine.”

“No, it is not. You’re in an unmated situation where you’re living with your mate. You’re close to her. You don’t think there would be consequences?”

“We’re taking it slow.”

“There is no such thing as slow, Klaus. There is steady that explodes into chaos between you. This is dangerous, for the both of you, and to make matters worse, we have another pack with unmated males, and that can make it even worse.”

Klaus was very much aware of how much worse it could be.

He’d promised his father he would have total control, but there was only so much that he could do before he completely … flipped.

His pancakes were all gone, and he listened to Greg attempting to flirt with Poppy. It was pitiful.

“I’ll come with the two of you. I’ve got nothing else to do,” he said. “I can keep you both company.”

He’d also be able to keep a safe distance between the two and hopefully preserve his sanity.

He hoped. He doubted it would happen.

One look at Poppy, and he knew they were heading towardscrewed.

Chapter Ten

They were screwed.

Poppy didn’t need to be a genius to figure that one out. Their time of being on the easy train was fast running out. They were so fucked.

Greg’s warning made a whole lot of sense. Her developing feelings toward Klaus made more sense to her. Their need to mate was taking over. It was why she was constantly aroused when he was near.

It wasn’t good, but she had a reasoning for it.

Spending the day with Greg and with Klaus didn’t exactly help matters. Greg kept trying to get close to her, and Klaus, being her mate, didn’t accept that. He tried to keep them apart, and she was grateful for that.

She didn’t want to be close to Greg. No, she wanted Klaus.

Poppy had to stop herself multiple times from wrapping her arms around Klaus, sniffing him, kissing him, and wanting him.

Her body had gone from warm to hot within a matter of minutes. She had to control herself. To take deep breaths. Not panic.

After enjoying lunch and then dinner with the two men, she made her way home and hung out with her mom, trying to act like everything was normal when it wasn’t.

She waited until everyone was distracted, sneaking out of the house and heading into the forest.
