I frowned. “So that does happen then? There’s a point in your life when you start to think, ‘I got this.’”

“I didn’t say I got anything. Just that I had my life a little together.”

We locked eyes. I wanted to stroke his face and feel his lips against mine, but despite the tequila, I held myself back. “I think you seem... solid.” I started to laugh. “I mean that as a compliment.”

Gah, he was so handsome. The way the right corner of his mouth lifted slightly higher than the left, gave the impression he wouldn’t take offence no matter what I said. He was just so sure. So steady. “Solid? Not exactly a top ten compliment, is it?”

“You know what I mean. Like...”

“I’m all hard muscle?”

“Well, I didn’t exactly mean that, but...” I scanned down his arms and across his chest and pretended I didn’t notice when he flexed his biceps, stretching the cotton of his shirt. “The shoe fits, my friend.”

I ran my tongue over my top lip and then reached for my water glass, trying to cover up the fact that I’d basically been licking my lips at the thought of Beau’s naked body. As I leaned forward, he pressed his rock-solid thigh against mine.

“The shoe, the clog, the over-the-thigh boot. They all fit.”

“I like you,” he said. The words fluttered over my skin like feathers, covering me in goosebumps.

I nodded. “I like you too.”

The waitress interrupted us. At some point, we’d abandoned our food and our plates had been cleared. “Can I get you guys anything else?”

Beau looked at me. “You want another margarita?”

“Absolutely not,” I replied.

“Just the bill, thanks.”

“Yup,” I said, trying to sound casual. “Just the bill.” Absentmindedly, I traced a line with my index finger from his knee up his leg.

“Do that again and I’ll strip you naked and eat you out in front of the entire city.” His voice was deep and gravelly. As I met his gaze, his ice-blue eyes had turned grey, like a storm was brewing.

“Okay,” I said, but I couldn’t decide whether or not to touch him.

“I can’t sit here without kissing you for another second. Let’s get out of here.”

Apparently the feeling was mutual.
