“So you can do what with it? Gamble? All of that wine, women, and song I’ve been hearing about?”
“No different than the wine, women, and song I’ve been hearing about you,” RJ shot back.
Robert stared at his son. He knew him. He could see that worried look in his eyes. “What kind of shit you’ve gotten yourself into, RJ?” he asked him.
RJ leaned back and winced from the pain he was still experiencing. Then he looked at the woman seated next to him. “Get me a beer,” he said to her.
When she didn’t move fast enough for him, he shoved her.
“Quit, RJ!”
“Then get your skinny ass up and do what I told you to do!”
The young lady got up and disappeared into the kitchen area. RJ looked at his father. “I need a hundred thousand by Friday, or they won’t be so nice the next time.”
Robert could hardly believe his ears. “A hundred thousand dollars for what?”
“To pay a debt I owe.”
“What kind of debt?”
RJ wouldn’t answer.
“What kind of debt, RJ?”
“Are you gonna give it to me or not?”
“Not!” Robert said emphatically. “Not until you tell me why.”
RJ was reluctant again. But he told him. “I invested in a catamaran business in Jamaica that didn’t turn a profit like I had hoped. Problem is, I took out money against my capital that I have to pay back by Friday or the whole business will go belly up. The other investors sent Big Bubba along just to remind me of my due date.”
Robert knew there was more to the story. “What were these yachts transporting?” he asked. “Drugs?”
RJ frowned. “Why do you always think the worst about me? Mom always told us that’s what you do. And she was right.”
“Drugs killed your mother,” Robert said.
RJ leaned his head back. “I know that. Why are you telling me something I already know?”
“Your ass better not be involved in that shit.”
“I’m not, Dad. Alright?” Then he looked at his father with pleading in his eyes. “Are you going to give it to me?”
“Where’s Everly?”
RJ frowned. “How should I know?”
“She’s your baby sister.”
“She’s home, alright? She’s sleep. She’s out on a date. I don’t know! Bad enough I have to work with her all day, thanks to you. I don’t have to nursemaid her after hours too. It’s ten at night.”
“I know what time it is.” Then Robert added: “In more ways than one.”
Father and son exchanged a look. And then Robert began leaving.
“Dad! Are you going to help me or not?”
Robert was reluctant, but he gave in. “Go see Jerry.”
