“So?”

Katherine tugged, and he stood.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“Yes?”

“Yes,” she repeated, louder now. “I need to go home and pack.”

“Do you? We can buy everyth—”

“I need to go home and tell my mother and my aunt,” she added. “Then, I can go.”

Urian stared at her, looking unsure.

“I’m too fey now to lie to you, Urian,” she swore. “Tonight. We can leave tonight.”

Urian picked her up, arms sliding around her waist, and kissed her breathless. Again. This was it, her forever.

Katherine’s legs wrapped around him, and she tried to let all of her excitement and joy shine through in the way she kissed him.

Mine, she thought, not daring to say the word aloud.

No accidental weddings here!

But she was certain of this, of him, ofthem.

“What about a hotel room tonight?” she suggested when he pulled back. “Go somewhere. I don’t know . . . L.A.? New York? Somewhere with an international airport, and then we can decide where to fly to.”

“Perfect.” He let her slide down so her feet were back on the ground. For a moment, he paused, and she knew he had questions.

“What?”

“Do you want me to meet your mum?” Urian looked both awkward and willing at once. “I’m not sure if that will make her feel better or worse. Me being what I am and—”

“Whatweare,” Katherine corrected. “She can’t be upset with what you are unless she hates what I am.”

He gave Katherine a look.

“Fine. It will probably be easier talking to her on my own, but . . . just like two hours?” She squeezed his hand, and they headed toward the car.

Luckily, Callisto was back in car shape, and Katherine tried not to wonder what happened to the dress of bloodied rodents that the car wore when she was in human-ish shape.

“We are grateful for the ride,” she said quietly as she slipped into the passenger seat.

The car radio was silent. Maybe Callisto was a little hung over, too.

Katherine wasn’t asking any questions of Callisto. Truth be told, she felt a little uncomfortable thinking that the car was also a person. Instead of thinking too long on that, Katherine waited for Urian to climb into the driver’s side of the car.

“Will Callisto come to Europe with us?” she asked him once he was settled.

“If she chooses,” he said. “I never really know what to think with her. I certainly wasn’t expecting her to show up and slap me a few times.”

The engine turned on with a roar.

The radio switched on to play “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash. It wasn’t clear whether it meant that Callisto was done with travel, or not, but Katherine suspected that they were going abroad without the car—which was a little bit preferrable in her opinion. The car was fine when she was a creature, but in woman-shape Callisto was more than a little terrifying.

And a bit of a third wheel when Katherine was setting out on a romantic adventure with Urian.
