I’d debated whether or not to inform Sunny about that. I finally settled on not telling her how exactly. “I think that no matter what happens between Titus and Julian, we need to remember that we were friends first.”

Sunny nodded, taking my hand in hers. “And we also need to remember that when we inevitably use the knowledge we have of each other’s cities, it’s only because, for now, we’re on opposite sides.”

I squeezed her hand, glad she got it.

She’d basically just given me permission to use whatever knowledge I’d gained while here when the incursions started back up.

Lord knows she’d use her inside information from being Julian’s assistant.

“Friends first,” I agreed.

Sunny shook her head. “Queens first. And friends will understand that.”

The smile vanished from my face.

She was right.

I nodded, solemnly.

“Promise not to hurt each other. Nothing below the belt?”

Sunny agreed. “Promise to give us a good fight?”

I nodded. I didn’t want to. I didn’t want there to be a need to agree. I wanted us on the same side. But I agreed, anyway.

“Until we’re on the same side again,” I said, stretching over the table to give her a hug.

She squeezed me tight, and I fought the sting of tears at the back of my eyes. “It’s not forever, Eden,” she said against my shoulder.

I pulled away, collecting my things and running out before I started to bawl like a baby. “We gotta go, B,” I said, running past him and out the front door.

I was already at the elevator by the time B caught up with me. He didn’t ask me what was wrong or why we were in such a hurry.

He didn’t mention the tears I know he saw in the mirrored walls of the elevator. And he stayed silent as I drove us over the bridge to Laurel Cove.

“We’ll figure it out, Eden. We have to, or Sherrie’s gonna kick my ass when I can’t make our date.”

“I’m sorry, B.” My sudden departure from the tower probably stung the most for him. He had to leave his new mate on the other side of a ward.

“We both knew it would happen. It was a conversation we’d had multiple times.”

I nodded and aimed us home.
