Twenty-Six
“I’m bettingyou don’t want to come back to the tower with us to try to—”
Jaxson shook his head. “Under no circumstances will I ever go to that tower. He enslaved my ancestors, forcing them to stay in their wolf forms to guard his land.”
That was something I needed to get Titus’s side on.
Obviously, I believed Jaxson completely. But it seemed so out of character for the vampire I’d grown to know over the last few days.
“I understand completely. We can meet here. Do you mind me bringing Sunny into the conversation?” I’d used her name to incite a girl-power moment, but if Jax was at all uncomfortable with the idea of Titus’s mate having inside knowledge about him or his pack, I’d work around it.
Jaxson gazed beyond me, signaling to another pack member with just his eyes. Moments later, Sunny and B were escorted to us.
Jaxson stared at Sunny, who held his gaze with unwavering composure. Even when he allowed some of his wolf to peek through and his face took on a feral, dangerous quality, Sunny didn’t so much as flinch. “Are you a spy for Titus?”
“Absolutely not.”
“And how can I trust that?”
Sunny let loose some of her own feral nature. “Because I wouldn’t be with a man who hadn’t done the work to be a person I could love. Titus has no interest in your wolf pack, or any other, for that matter.”
“That wasn’t the case not so long ago.”
“I’m aware. But, as far as I know, he’s not interested in breaking any agreements made with his rival during past incursions. You have nothing to fear from Titus or Cypress City.”
Jaxson shifted his gaze to me. “I’ll need some time to confer with other packs. It’s not just mine that has something to lose if she’s lying.”
“She’s not lying, Jax.”
“All the same, I need to be diligent and careful for my pack.”
I understood. I wanted to ask Titus about his history with the wolves myself.
“I’ll get in touch when I’m satisfied Sunny doesn’t pose a threat.”
I nodded. Until then, I’d noodle out possible solutions for his alpha pup problem.
“Since there isn’t a ceremony, do you want to stay for the run?”
“Run?” I asked.
B spoke up, surprisingly. He bounced on his toes with excitement. “Oh, man! I heard about your runs after big events from a buddy I used to train with. Count me in!”
Jax grinned at him. “Good, and you, ladies?”
Sunny and I glanced at each other. “I guess.”
Jaxson’s grin shifted into the wolfiest, most shit-eating thing I’d ever seen on his face. “Wonderful. Better buckle up,” he said and shifted right before us.
I had to stop myself from backing away from him.
Jaxson’s wolf was nothing short of majestic. His head came to my shoulder, fur thick and a deep, shiny brown. And those eyes. Those wolfish amber eyes glowed with intelligence. With magic.
“Fuck me, you’re fucking gorgeous, Jax,” I murmured, reaching instinctively to bury my fingers in his fur.
He nuzzled into my touch, tongue lolling out as a happy chuff came from his snout. Seconds later, he shot off like a dark streak of lightning, disappearing into the tree line.
B wasn’t far behind, blurring after him.
