I felt my throat clog with emotion. “Yeah, he is.”
Beck opened his eyes and studied me. His gaze was surprisingly sharp considering how much pain he must have been in. “He’s special to you.”
I nodded. “My…my husband gave him to me as an engagement present six years ago.”
“You’re married?” Beck whispered, and I didn’t miss the hint of disappointment in his voice, though I wasn’t sure if he was bothered by the fact that he thought I was married or that I’d cheated on my husband with him.
I sucked in a deep breath. “Not anymore. He died two years ago.”
“What was his name?”
“Griff…Griffin.” Pain lanced through my heart, but I forced it away.
“I’m sorry,” Beck said softly as his eyes held mine and I knew his words were genuine. I managed a nod, but that was as much as I could get out. I could hear sirens in the distance and from the way Beck tensed up in my hold, I knew he could hear them too.
“Please,” he said unevenly. “Please don’t tell anyone what happened back there,” he said as he shifted his eyes over his shoulder.
Between his strange request to tell his fathers he hadn’t run his car into the tree on purpose and his behavior back at the barn, I didn’t have even the slightest clue what was going on, but I knew I couldn’t deny the request. “I’ll tell them you were heading home to pick up something you forgot, but that I didn’t see the accident.”
Beck started to nod, but I tightened my hold on his neck. “Don’t move,” I reminded him.
He didn’t say anything else as the ambulance rolled up. I heard another siren off in the distance and suspected it was likely Jax or Rhys responding to the call.
I held my position as the first paramedic showed up at my side. I recognized him instantly as a friend of my bosses. His eyes skimmed me briefly and then settled on my hands. “Hi,” the man said to Beck as he made eye contact with him. “My name’s Luke. What’s yours?”
“Beck,” Beck said tiredly.
“Beck, how are you feeling?”
“My head hurts.”
“Okay, we’re going to take care of you. I just need you to stay real still, okay?”
“Yeah,” Beck murmured.
Luke’s gaze shifted to me. “You called it in, Quinn?” he asked.
I nodded. “I heard the accident from the barn,” I said, ignoring the bitter taste that flooded my mouth along with the lie.
Luke put his hands over mine. Once he had a firm hold on Beck’s neck, he gave me a nod and I dropped my hands and then moved out of his way.
“Quinn,” Beck said hesitantly and I leaned down to settle my hand on his shoulder as Luke took over the spot where I’d been sitting on the bottom part of the door frame.
“I’m right here, Beck.”
“Brody, grab the C-Collar,” Luke calmly called to his partner.
“Already got it!”
I glanced behind me at the ambulance and went still at the sight of the man who had his back to me.
No fucking way.
But I knew even before the man turned around what he’d look like. Blond and built…and a fucking fantastic kisser.
The man Luke had referred to as Brody turned and froze when he saw me, his eyes going wide. He managed to collect himself pretty quickly, but I knew it would only last the few seconds it would take for him to see who the patient was.
Brody hurried past me and, sure enough, he came to a dead stop at the sight of Beck. His eyes jumped to mine and I shook my head.
