He didn’t sign the letter with love. I’m not exactly sure if that’s a good or bad sign, but it’s definitely a sign that something has changed in him because his guys didn’t get me tonight.
I close my eyes, handing the letter to Lukas.
He bought me flowers? Why? He has to know I don’t want to be with him. I could never be with someone that hurt my father the way he has.
Someone that has hurtmeall these years by making me live in fear. His actions aren’t making any sense, and I hate it.
Opening my eyes, I move the tissue paper in the box, and my stomach rolls at the contents.
It’s not the destroyed and shredded petals of the roses that bother me, but more the fact that they’re covered in blood.
Paired with his letter, this could mean so many things, but I think it’s a sign he’s about to snap. That I’ve pushed him to his breaking point and if I don’t save Dad fast, I might just be too late.
Maybe I have to give myself up to him in order to save Dad.
“Don’t even think about it, sweetheart,” Torren says, jolting me out of my thoughts.
“Think what?” There’s no way he knows what was going through my mind. Right?
“That you’re going to give in to this twisted fuck’s delusions to try and save your dad.”
I wince at how accurate his thoughts are, and I’m about to fight him when Luke’s phone rings.
“Matt? What’s up?” he asks them, putting the phone on speaker.
“We just finished disposing of those fuckers. We’re on the way to the apartment, but Daniels is heading out of town. I think you need to track him,” Matty says calmly.
“Ollie and I can do that,” Luke acknowledges. “We’ll head out now, but make sure you keep your eyes and ears open. Who knows what the fuck is about to go down?”
My stomach bottoms out at all the implications his words could mean.
“Luke,” I whisper, and he pulls me into his side.
“Haliee had a gift waiting when we arrived. Dimitri is close to snapping. I’m not putting anything past his craziness right now.”
Creed swears on the other end of the phone. “Why do the crazy obsessive bastards who don’t get the girl always have to lose their minds?” he curses some more.
“Ironic,” I snort, and everyone laughs a little.
“Are you saying I’m crazy, Doll?” Creed teases.
“I’m saying you’re all the above,” I point out, trying to lighten the mood.
“Got him,” Ollie says, standing up.
“Ollie has him on the cameras. We’re heading out now. I’m sending Tor to watch the building while you two are inside. Corden and Barren will stay with Haliee.” He doesn’t leave room for negotiation, and no one tries.
Once everyone hangs up, Luke and Ollie both kiss me goodbye after loading up their weapons.
“Be safe. Please,” I whisper into Luke’s mouth.
“Always, Scratch. I promise we’ll come back.” He kisses me once more before following Ollie, who’s already out the door and in the car waiting.
“Why do I feel like something is going to go wrong?” I whisper, and Bear and Cord surround me.
“Breathe, babe. It will be okay.”
Let’s hope.
