Ihave to keep chanting to myself to keep my composure and not start ripping motherfuckers’ heads off their shoulders.
Since that phone call from Daniels earlier this morning, Lukas has been kept busy and away from us, again, and I’m now filling the role of bodyguard for our girl while she’s at school.
None of these are my classes, so I can pay attention to things that Cord and Barren may miss because they actually need to pass their classes too.
The problem is the student body is staring at us as we pass, and it’s setting me on edge. It’s like they’re looking on and just waiting for something to go down.
Amber and her bitch squad whisper to each other and giggle, sharing rumours and insults to try and make everyone hate Haliee, or at the very least make it so we always have eyes on us to see if something will go down or not and it’s making my skin crawl.
I look beside me at Haliee keeping pace. She’s been miserable on her period, and I’d give anything to help her get some relief, but she’s being a damn champ through the pain.
Being here, especially with Brent still missing, is tearing this girl apart but her shoulders are squared back, and her chin is held high. If you weren’t privy to the knowledge that a huge part of her is missing right now, you’d never know something was wrong.
That’s the type of strength one admires.
She’s a goddess through this misery, and all I want to do is be worthy enough to bow and bask in this girl’s glow.
We head inside the south campus doors and reach Psych class in no time. Barren and Cord are already seated against the far wall in a perfect position to view the whole room and under the desks, and I know it’s somewhere they always sit. It’s a strategic move that all of us try to practice when we’re out in public.
It’s better to see shady shit coming than to be blindsided by it.
I’ve been hearing stories about the teacher being late to class and looking worse for the wear, but it seems something has changed today since he’s on time and doesn’t look like he hasn’t showered in weeks.
His eyes travel the classroom, taking in the attendance before his eyes land on me.
“Um, I’ve never seen you before. Are you new to my class, or have transfer scripts on you, son?” The motherfucker raises his eyebrow at me, questioning.
Before I even realize what I’m doing, I get up and grab him, slamming his back against the whiteboard.
“I’m not your fucking son. And as far as we are all concerned, I’m my brother today. Just close your eyes and say: yes, Lukas.” I sneer in his face.
“Yes, Lukas,” he sputters, shaking like a leaf.
I release him and pat his cheek, giving him a cheeky grin before making my way up the aisle towards Haliee, her lips pinched in anger.
I really hate anyone who has the audacity to call me son. If you aren’t my father and you call me son, I’m going to hurt you. You can thank my slut of a mother and her never-ending revolving door of men for that.
“Was that really necessary?” she chastises me immediately as I sit down.
“Fuck yes, it was. I could have just made him call me daddy. Which do you prefer, beautiful?” I tease.
She ducks her head and blushes as the students start pouring into the room.
Three taps and the slide of a pencil have me snapping my head to the door of the room. We came up with the silent code to warn that someone could be a threat to Haliee without raising said threat’s suspicions.
Amber trots her ass into the room like she owns the fucking building, smirking up at us and choosing a seat on the other side, closer to my brothers.
I know she’s in this class, but usually with so many of us around, she doesn’t act like the queen fucking bee since Cord knocked her down a peg in front of the entire school a while back.
Her sudden confidence is unsettling.
I look over to Cord and Barren, but they’re staring at her too, wondering what bullshit she has up her sleeve next.
The class drags on as the professor drones in a monotone voice that makes me want to rip my hair out.
There’s no way I would survive in school. This is completely fucking boring, and how in the fuck Barren has dealt with sitting in here for so long, I will never know.
When it finally ends and we start to head out, I notice Amber hanging back. It has alarm bells ringing in my head, so I pull Haliee into my side and tuck her safely there until we get past this bitch.
