She launches herself at me and strangles me in a tight hug. I decide, then and there, that no matter the situation, I’ll always give into my calling and greedily hold her in my arms, drinking in the warmth and comfort she’s offering me.
“I’m sorry, Ollie. I’m scared. I can’t lose him. I’ve lost too much of my life and I just want to live in peace. Dad not being here to tell me it’s going to be alright is taking a toll on my soul,” Haliee cries into my neck.
“I know, Angel, and I promise, me and the guys will do whatever it takes to get him back. You shouldn’t worry yourself sick. It kills me seeing you in pain,” I reply, squeezing her tighter and looking out the window at the fresh snow falling from the sky.
A brilliant idea forms in my head and I hope like hell Haliee will go along with it.
“Tell you what. Scrap the board games and dress warm. I’ll meet you outside in ten minutes, okay?” I say, letting some of the excitement come back.
“What are you planning?” Haliee questions, wiping the tears and snot from her face and glaring at me with suspicious eyes.
“God, you’re beautiful. Hurry up and you’ll see!” I say, picking her up and tossing her back down on the bed.
She looks up at me, giggling at my antics and smiles. It feels like the wind has been knocked out of my chest because if I never in my life did anything else right, this one moment where I made her smile was worth it.
