“Good girl.” I want to mentally slap myself. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be addressing you like I’m your Dom. I have a hard time shutting that off sometimes.” And there’s something about the two of you that makes me want to protect you and give you what you need, but I don’t say that.
“It’s okay,” she whispers, and I watch as Peter grabs her hand, rubbing his thumb over her palm to comfort her.
I want to do that. I want to do it for both of them, but I need to remember that I’m not what they need.
“It’s not appropriate, but I’m glad to see I haven’t offended you.”
Julie frowns a little but nods her head towards me as if she’s accepting my answer.
“This is a nice restaurant,” she whispers, her eyes wide as she looks around. I’m getting the impression that they don’t eat out often. At least, not in places quite this upscale, and it makes me like them even more.
I may be rich, but I worked hard to get to that point.
When my best friend and I were younger, we worked tooth and nail to build our first company from the ground up, making it extremely profitable and securing our place in the world of Solar Energy.
Eventually, I left the company to Landon and opened up another sister company to work alongside him. Making the world a better place the best way we know how.
Where Landon works only on solar power, Life Solar and Water Properties has come up with ways for more and more people to access clean water around the world.
“It’s one of my favourites. My parents used to bring my sister and I here a couple times a year when we were younger.” Wow, where did that come from? Talking about my past with complete strangers.
“That’s really nice,” Peter says, smiling at me, and I feel myself smiling back.
“I enjoy the memories for sure.” I look between them, wondering how I’m going to bring this up and hopefully not offend them, when the waitress comes over.
“Hi, my name is Sarah! Can I get you anything to drink this evening?” She looks to me, smiling wide, but not paying Julie and Peter any attention.
If she’s flirting with me and thinking I will appreciate her ignoring my tablemates, she has another think coming.
I move my eyes to them, slightly brushing her off so they know that they’re my main focus.
“I’ll have a glass of lemon water, please. What would you two like?”
Julie blinks at me, seemingly flustered for a moment before responding. “Actually, that sounds delicious. I’ll have some as well. Thank you.”
Peter nods in agreement, and I smile.
“A pitcher of water with ice and lemon, along with three glasses. Thank you.” I turn back to the waitress when I address her, and she’s still smiling at me like she doesn’t realize how rude she’s being.
“Coming right up!” She doesn’t even give them a second look before she flaunts off, and I shake my head.
“I’m sorry about that.” I look back to them and they’re blinking at me.
“It’s not your fault she was flirting with you,” Julie insists, and Peter blushes, nodding his agreement.
“Yeah. I mean, you’re a really attractive guy.” His blush intensifies, and my heart beats a little faster.
He finds me attractive too. Shit, I feel like I’ve been struck with something because I can feel my own cheeks heating at the compliment.
My sister would laugh her ass off if she could see me right now.
“Thank you.” I pause for a moment before diving into the heart of why we’re here. “How old are you two?”
They both smile a little. “Twenty-one.”
Ouch. That’s a rough age gap, but it could be bigger.
If Landon and my sister have proven anything by being together, it’s that age really is just a number.
