“If infidelity isn’t our way to keep her paws off your money, what is?”
“You sound invested in this.”
“I am.” He pulled his pad back out. “The less she gets the more I do.” He shrugged. “Besides, she’s awful.”
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
“Thank you for never inviting me over for dinner.”
“I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.” I rubbed my temples again. A headache had formed and it had nothing to do with the whiskey.
He clutched his chest. “Thisisgetting serious between us. And here I thought you hated me.”
“I don’t like you.” I jumped off the washing machine. “Want a drink?”
“Bring the bottle and an empty glass. I need to keep my wits, but I’ll probably throw that out the window after a few minutes with you.”
CHAPTERSIX
JOJO
“How didyou get out so fast?”
Penelope threw her arms around my neck the second I stepped into the apartment.
Although she’d been gone for years, it still smelled like Grandma Josephine.
“Sheer luck.” I hugged her back hard. “And you’re okay?”
“I’m fine.” She blew me off like the afternoon had been nothing. “That got wild fast, didn’t it?”
“It did. Sometimes the smallest spark can ignite an inferno.”
“I called all the nearby precincts, and by the time I found you, you were already released.”
Kane.
I’d still be in jail if it weren’t for him.
“As long as you’re okay, that’s all that matters.”
She leaned her head against my shoulder. “I’m grown now. You don’t have to worry.”
“You’ll always be my baby.” I rested my head on top of hers. “And I’ll never stop worrying.”
“Getting arrested is a small price to pay for helping people.”
She’d gotten that from being around people in our organization. And maybe a little from me.
“You have an important role to play. And you can’t do that if you have a record.”
She flounced to the kitchen. “Why don’t I ever get to have any fun?”
I trailed behind her. “I thought we did have fun.”
She filled the tea kettle and set it on the stove. “You need to go out on a date. Neil wants you. He’s nice. You’ve known him for years.”
I held up my hand. “I’m not dating someone who’s part of the foundation.”
