“Yes sir, just message me when you’re ready,” my driver answered. “I picked up the flowers and balloons you asked for, sir.”
“Yes, thanks, I can see them from here.” I closed my eyes.
“Here we are, sir. Should I carry this up for you?”
“I appreciate it, but I better be able to manage flowers and some balloons.” I laughed at how silly it would be if I couldn’t. “If I ever say I can’t, just laugh at me.”
I climbed out of the limo and dragged my tired body into the building. Parker was coming through the lobby area as I entered.
“I thought I saw your limo out there.” I stopped to talk to him.
“How are the triplets doing?” Parker asked. “I heard you had a long night.”
“I won’t bother asking how you heard that.” I rubbed at the back of my neck. “How’s my little patient upstairs?”
“She’s doing great. I heard something about the zoo.” Parker pulled his cell from his pocket when it buzzed. “Gotta run. I have surgery in an hour.”
“Do me a favor and stop into the nursery after your surgery. See what your thoughts are on Michael Collins.”
“I will. Send me any notes.” Parker said. “Oh, can you check in on Sophie tonight? I’m going out of town overnight.”
“I’m heading there right now with these, then back to the hospital.” I shook the balloons. “No worries. I’ll spend some time with them this evening.”
“I was wondering what you were doing with balloons.” Parker looked at me. “Are you getting caught up in Chloe?”
“Look at you, taking notice of things, Parker.” I patted his shoulder.
“That wasn’t actually an answer,” Parker said. “I notice a lot of things.”
“I like her, but I know she’s leaving, so why get involved?” I walked toward the elevator. “I meant you noticed something that wasn’t medical.”
“I noticed you didn’t win the Easter egg hunt.” Parker smiled. “And I smiled about it.”
“A sense of humor now, too. I like it.” The elevator doors closed.
Chapter 56
Chloe
“It’s your favorite doctor. At least, I think. I can’t see his face behind a bunch of balloons,” Mia called back to Sophie.
“Why is he here at your house?” Sophie spun her stool around to see.
“No idea, but we’re about to find out.” Mia grabbed Trey by the shirt, pulling him into the apartment when he didn’t move. “Trey, get in here, you maniac.”
“How did you know it was me? What if I was actually a maniac?” Trey asked in mock astonishment.
“Oh, please. There are very few people who can get up that elevator, and Parker does not buy balloons.” Mia waved him into the kitchen. “Sophie is waiting on her breakfast, so come on. Why are you here anyways? Don’t you have some kids to make better?”
“Dr. Trey, you came to see me.” Sophie put her arms out to Trey. “I missed you.”
“Yes, I do, but first I wanted to check on my number one patient.” Trey answered Mia and lifted Sophie out of the barstool and danced around the room.
I heard Trey and Mia talking as I was coming down the hallway, so I stopped to listen without them knowing.
You’re being silly, just go out there.
So, still in my robe and pulling my hair back with a headband, I turned the corner from the hallway into the kitchen, pretending I didn’t know Trey was there.
