“I’m sorry, what did you ask, Victoria?” I asked, hearing her whisper and wanting to let her know I was actually awake.
Mia gestured for Victoria to join her. They waved for me to join but I snuggled my blanket closer and shook my head no. I watched as they took turns reading the bios without looking at the pictures. Anyone would think that was weird, but I remembered hearing that Victoria had picked Mia without looking at the pictures and she was determined it was the formula for Trey, too.
“I think you should look at the pictures.” Mia said. “He needs someone who matches his look and his style as well as his big personality.”
“I don’t know about that,” I said.
“Chloe, are you talking to us?” Mia asked. “She’s looks asleep, but she hears us.”
“It sounded like she was disagreeing with you, though.” Victoria looked at her files.
“I think I’ve narrowed it down to these two.” Mia slid them closer to Victoria. “I like the one on the left because she seems fun-loving, and the other one enjoys meeting new people and social events, so that fits with Trey’s lifestyle.”
“Don’t you agree, Chloe?” Mia asked, smiling at Victoria.
“What did you decide, Victoria?” I mumbled into the conversation.
“I have eliminated the two on the floor.” Victoria refilled the wine glass she had carried out with her. “Of the two I have left, one likes adventure and comedy movies, and the other is a pediatric nurse. I wonder if the nurse would be the most compatible?”
“I don’t think you should pick the nurse,” I mumbled.
“Why not?’ Victoria asked
“He needs someone that takes him out of that world when he is not at work.” I felt myself falling deeper asleep.
“She has a point.” Victoria took the nurse’s file and dropped it to the pile on the floor.
“Any other opinions, Chloe?” Victoria asked.
“Not the one who likes social events either,” I said, turning to my side.
Mia laughed at the look on Victoria’s face.
“She does this. When she was in high school, I would ask her all about school and boys, and she would give me one-word answers. But you let her get sleepy and drift in and out, you get all kinds of answers,” Mia explained. “Try it. Ask her a question. She’ll answer it”
Victoria arched her eyebrows. “The psychologist in me is fascinated. I’ve read case studies like this but never met anyone who did it. Chloe, why not the girl who likes social events?”
I brushed at my hair, never waking up fully. “She seems more into showing herself off. She will always want to be in the spotlight.”
Mia took the file and tossed it to the pile on the floor. “Chloe, honey, what about the other bios?” Mia winked at Victoria. “It’s like a magic answer machine.”
“No.” I groaned. “None of them. What magic machine? Did I miss something?”
“Oh no, our magic answer machine has gotten cranky,” Mia said. “I’m gonna try for one more elimination. What about the one who loves adventure?”
I sat straight up. “What are you guys talking about? What? Why are you looking at me like that, Mia? You’re acting weird.”
“Oh Lord, this was perfect. I’m going to write a paper on it.” Victoria packed up the two files still in question. “Those files are for the trash. Don’t let Trey get his hands on them. I have to get going.”
“Thanks for coming to see us, Victoria. I know Sophie loved your time watchingPeppa Pig.” I stood and stretched. “We’ll see you again before we leave, right?”
“Yes, dear, I will be back in a day or two. How about we have a girl’s day and shopping?” Victoria asked. “Sophie and you both deserve it.”
“I do love shopping.” I waved goodbye and laid back down. “Mia, what were we talking about?”
