“Okay, that’s good. Because I am sure Malcome is coming for Olivia,” her brother was of the same opinion as me. “Ilya and I worked out security details and he’s getting additional bodies.”
“Good.” I wanted every square foot of this land covered. No risks when it came to Olivia and my niece.
Oliver continued in his no-nonsense voice. “Although for the life of me I can’t understand how Malcome would guess she was in Russia.”
Fucking Vlad, that’s how.
Vlad knew Olivia was in Russia and reported it to Malcome. Now, the gamble was whether Vlad would search only the last two years or would he go back further. Since we’ve been trying to turn our life around and live on the legitimate side of the business, we have scaled those transactions in the recent years and then eliminated them completely. But Vlad wasn’t stupid, and unfortunately, he had been in the loop.
I could just fucking kick myself for not being onto him earlier. He has been selling us out for the past six months, hiding information right under our noses. There was nobody to blame but myself. I just coughed up his bullshit comments to his pettiness and desire to do things the old way while Dimitry, Sergei, and I have been striving to legalize.
“Have all his accounts been frozen?” I asked Oliver. “Have you seized offshore accounts?”
A loud, happy squeal had me turning my attention back to the scene outside. Olivia and Tasha moved over to the beach and were splashing each other.
“Stop, it's icy cold,” Olivia’s voice carried through the wind. They were both laughing out loud.
“Yes, I’ve emptied all his accounts and set them into trusts,” Oliver’s voice was proud. “You just have to decide where you want it to go.”
“Why don’t you just put it into your account?” I asked him curiously. I didn’t need any more money. I was financially set for twenty lifetimes.
“I’m good,” he retorted dryly. “And before you suggest my sister, don’t. She won’t take it. Why don’t you just donate it?”
Now that was a novelty. “Yes, I like that idea,” I told him. “I want to get Olivia’s ideas on where it should go.”
A pause followed before he spoke up.
“So you and my sister, ha?” I guess I couldn’t blame him for not sounding thrilled. If my sister was dating someone like me, I wouldn’t be thrilled either.
But lucky for me, I didn’t need her brother’s approval and his sister chose me so he can go fuck himself. Although I liked him and wouldn’t mind having him as my brother-in-law. Shit, I was already imagining having Olivia as my wife.
“I guess your silence mirrors my sister’s feelings,” he continued. “She told me to mind my own fucking business. I am fairly positive she had never said that to me before.”
A satisfied smile played on my face. Olivia made me want to strive to be a better man. I wanted to be the best man for her.
“I’m happy for her and for you,” her brother added when I remained silent.
“Really?” I couldn’t help the slight sarcasm in my voice.
“Yes, really,” his reply was sincere. “You’ll be able to protect her from anything. And she feels safe with you. As long as she is happy, so am I. But if you hurt her-” he didn’t need to finish the sentence and I didn’t fault him for the threat. Damn, he threatened me twice over the last few days and I let him get away with it. I must be getting soft.
“Duly noted,” I replied. I’d rather cut my dick off than hurt Olivia. I saw her and my ward running into the house, both of them more wet than not and full of sand. The picture warmed my heart.
“Any issues at the casino?” I asked to change the subject. It was uncharacteristic of me to entrust my business to a stranger but Oliver was the right kind of man. His background in intelligence security was invaluable and I knew without a doubt he would never screw me over. After all, his sister meant the world to him. His sister meant the world to me too.
“Everything is running smoothly.” A few more words were exchanged before we ended the call.
Olivia and Tasha’s footsteps and laughter echoed throughout the house. If I had to guess, they were headed to get cleaned up.
I quickly dialed up Dimitry.
“Nikolai,” his answer came through.
“Vlad is working with Malcome Schmidt,” I got straight to the point. “He’ll be trying to locate Olivia so ensure you have your security on alert over there.”
“Fucking Vlad,” he muttered. “We should have gotten rid of him a long time ago.”
I couldn’t agree more but there was no sense in dwelling on it. We’d get rid of him now, one way or the other.
