Chapter Eleven
Wednesday came around and I had arranged for Betty and her kids to sleep over at our place, since our house was bigger, and watch the kids while I went to the event with Kristoff. Their grandma had other plans, and this seemed like an even better alternative.
The event turned out to be a charity dinner with a number of extremely rich individuals to get together, talk business while at the same time donating large sums of money for various causes.
It was two in the afternoon by the time I finished showering. As soon as I finished drying off, my doorbell rang and I quickly pulled on a robe and hurried to answer the door. I was surprised to see a team of three ladies standing there.
“Hello, I’m Diane. We are here to get you ready for the event tonight.” The woman was stunning. It was hard not to stare at her with her ebony black hair and fair skin, the two at such contrast. Her lips were full and too big for her face, but oddly, it made her look even more exotic. She must be used to people staring at her because she gives me a warm big smile.
“Kristoff never mentioned you,” I commented stupidly.
“He had me booked for a week now. Maybe he forgot?” she told me with a smile. “Either way, we are to do your hair, makeup, and nails.”
I frowned not really buying the excuse that Kristoff forgot. The man was a machine. And he thought of everything, and never forgot anything. I was surprised at myself, but I actually liked that he organized all the logistics for tonight, including the beauty team. I’ve always been the one to take care of it all, and this felt like a nice change. And nobody ever pampered me before… despite the fact that this was for a business purpose, it still felt nice.
I stepped aside to allow Diane and her two assistants through the doorway with all their luggage, like they were moving in.
She turned my way and said, “Good, I see you are already showered. Let’s get you pampered!”
“You know, I actually had my nails done last week… it’s silly to do it again.”
“Not to worry, we’ll refresh them.”
Whatever,I thought to myself.
As Diane and her assistants set up in the living room, I couldn’t help but hope they would be done with their stuff before my kids came home from school, otherwise it would be a disaster. She had massive amounts of makeup of all colors and shades spread across my coffee table. There was a separate basket with hair products and tools. Someone brought over a chair from the kitchen, and Diane pointed for me to sit in it.
“Where is the dress?” she asked me.
“Uh, all clothes were delivered Monday evening. I hung the dress against my wardrobe closet,” I said as I was getting up to go grab it. She put her hand on my shoulder and gently sat me down.
“Let’s get you started. I’ll have Leslie go grab it. You just give her directions.”
I did and Leslie was back within seconds.
“Ah… beautiful… just gorgeous. You will outdo them all.” She sounded convinced. I didn’t want to burst her bubble so I just kept silent. Although, I had to agree with her on the dress. It was gorgeous. Krisotff had great taste, there was no denying that. The dress was elegant and long with an open back that revealed nothing, but left plenty to the imagination.
She reached for one of her boxes, a black velvet one and handed it to me.
“This is for you,” she said. “And Kristoff asked me to give you this note with it.”
I looked at the note. All it said was,Wear this for me. Code to open the box is messaged to your phone.I went in search of my phone, while Diane was getting all her coloring selected. When I returned, I opened my phone and saw a message from Kristoff with a code to unlock.
I hesitantly punched the numbers into the black velvet box and it opened. We all gasped in unison.
The box contained the most beautiful necklace I had ever seen. It was elegant and screamed expensive. But that wasn’t the reason I loved it. It was classy, with a beautiful unique design. Small and medium size diamonds looped along the sides of the necklace till the diamonds became bigger all the way to the center, where lay an emerald teardrop gem that would probably feed a household for many, many years.
“Let’s put it on you, shall we?” Diane said. I just nodded. She put it around my neck and reached for something else. I noticed then there was a matching tennis bracelet in the box along with diamond stud earrings.
“Okay,” Diane said, getting back to business. “Now that we know the dress and jewelry, I am thinking we’ll have your beautiful brown hair with those natural auburn highlights up with a few curly strands falling down. That way you will look natural and the necklace and earrings will be visible accenting your beauty even more.”
She got to work, and she moved quickly and efficiently on my hair. Each one of her assistants was working on my nails, first manicure and then pedicure. After hair, Diane moved on to makeup with the same efficiency. I felt like it was my wedding day. Because where I come from, the only time you get pampered like this is on your wedding day. I thought back to my wedding day to Jack and frowned. Correction, today I got pampered more than I had been on my wedding day.
Diane and her team were expertly taking care of everything, which left me nothing to do but think. Kristoff really thought of every detail. Foolishly, I hoped he’d love the look. I frowned wondering where that thought came from. It shouldn’t matter if he loved the look, as long as I was happy with it.
“Stop frowning, dear,” Diana demanded with a focused look on me while working my makeup.
I immediately stopped frowning but the worry remained. Why would I care if he loved the way I looked? I am only working for him. Maybe he is doing all this to convince me to sign his second contract? I wondered where we’d be if I had signed the contract.
