I grinned, happy to hear the compliment. “That means I’m doing my job. I also had a few ideas on fundraisers. But first I need coffee. I can be grouchy without it.”

“Okay, meet you in five minutes.”

Five minutes later, I had my file and an extra-large cup of coffee as I strode into the conference room. Daniel and Maxim were already waiting for me.

“Sorry, I’m on the sixth minute,” I murmured my excuse. I knew military guys were extremely punctual, usually.Or early, I thought wryly. Punctuality was never my virtue.

“Hey, Layla,” Maxim’s voice greeted me and my body went into overheat mode. What is wrong with me?I just had a night full of orgasms and here Maxim’s greeting sent me into horny mode.

Maybe my body is going through some early form of changes.

I cleared my throat, avoiding his eyes. “Hey there.” The discomfort at knowing what I had done last night and that kiss with Maxim about a week ago made me tense.

“Daniel said you had a late night,” he added, casually leaning in his chair.

“Hmmm.”

Drop it. Please, drop it.

“Anything fun?”

“No, not really.” Except that I let a stranger spank me and then begged him to fuck me. But hey, it wasn’t that exciting. My entire body was in flames, making a liar out of me.

“Is it a secret?” Maxim inquired further, his chair squeaking under his muscles as he rocked back and forth.

“Yes,” I snapped back, meeting his gaze. Those eyes!I should have avoided his eyes. This man did things to me.

Oh my God. One of these two could have been at the club yesterday and saw me. My eyes shifted to Daniel. No, I didn’t remember seeing those dark eyes. But Maxim’s eyes.Stop the paranoia,I scolded myself.

If Maxim seemed annoyed at my bitchy snap, he didn’t show it. Actually, he seemed strangely happy, more so than usual, and there was a small, knowing smile on his lips.Ugh, those beautiful lips.

I bit my lower lip. My head needed to be screwed on right. It was loose right now, I was sure of it.

“Anyhow, here are the candidates I sorted through,” I told them, opening my file and spreading the files across the large conference table. “There is only one that I’m unsure of.”

“Which one?” Daniel inquired, interest tingeing in his voice.

I pointed to the last file. “This one.”

“What makes you unsure?” Maxim chimed.

I shrugged my shoulders. “I kind of know him, so I’m debating whether I’m being objective.”

Chapter Twenty

Maxim

Fuck, all I wanted to do was tell Daniel to get out of the room and bend Layla over the conference table then continue last night’s session. We fucked all night, and instead of sating some of my needs, I wanted her even more. Desperately. She was my own brand of cocaine.

The way she blushed, her pale skin coloring with crimson, made me think of her ass turning the same shade. Last night was only a mild version of my tastes. Yep, I was a sick bastard.

“What makes you unsure?” I knew this guy was the doctor that treated her. It wasn’t exactly a set up. The man died during service; however, I wanted to see if she’d lie to us.

She didn’t raise her eyes to answer, although her discomfort didn’t escape neither Daniel nor I.

“I was in an accident in high school,” she mumbled her response, her eyes on everything but me. “He was my doctor.”

“What kind of accident?” Daniel asked.
