“How about next week?” he suggested and I had to stop myself from squealing. Obviously, I have been around Brandon a lot.
There was no way I could pretend I wasn’t ecstatic. “Yes. Thank you!” Then I remembered my grandfather and my enthusiasm instantly tempered down.
“What’s the matter?” Daniel was too perceptive.
“Ah, my grandfather,” I didn’t know how to explain without sounding like my grandfather found me inadequate to get a job here. Coincidentally, he found me inadequate in every aspect of my life. “Umm… he didn’t want me to get a job at this foundation. He’s on the board and might object.” I chewed on my lip, aware how bad this sounded. “He probably will object.”
Danie’s sharp gaze was on me and it made me feel uncomfortable. Though I tried to hide it. He would retract his offer. He would know something was wrong with me. If my grandfather found me inadequate, there had to be something wrong with me.
“How about we just don’t mention it to him for now? And we’ll just use your first name when you start.” I stared at him with disbelief. Did I hear him right?
“Keep it a secret from Henry Cambridge?” I asked, to ensure I understood him correctly.
“Yes.” The answer was clear and concise. There was no chance of misunderstanding.
“Thank you so much.” He’d never know how much this meant to me. “Are you sure you don’t want to think about your offer? Do you need to talk to Maxim?”
He laughed. “You already had Maxim’s vote.” He picked up his phone and typed up a quick message.
“I am super excited for this. Thank you! ” I glanced at the watch. “Well, I’m sure you have another meeting, and I don’t want to tie up your time.”
He chuckled. “Are you dismissing me?”
“No, not at all,” I replied smiling. “I just don’t want you to feel obligated to keep me company.”
“He won’t keep you company,” I jumped at Maxim’s voice and my head whipped back in the direction of the voice. “I will.”
“I didn’t realize you were here,” I told him. My stomach did a little jump at seeing him again, my insides all blazing. He wore a three-piece dark suit. Daniel was handsome, but it would seem I only had eyes for this man these days. He was the only one that got my heart racing, my body melting, and my mind jumbling.
“We had a meeting and thought we could celebrate with lunch.”
Warmth bloomed through every cell at his words. Shit, I liked him a lot. I needed to keep it in check. He and Daniel would be my bosses.
“That sounds lovely,” I replied. It didn’t hurt to have a celebratory lunch. It had been a while since I had anything to celebrate.
“Oh, my wounded heart,” Daniel complained. “You didn’t want lunch with me and here you go having it with my partner.”
The only indication he was joking was a twinkle in those dark eyes. “We talked the entire time so I wouldn’t have eaten it at all. My tea is completely untouched.” I glanced at Maxim and then back to Daniel. “You could join us,” I suggested, although I wasn’t sure if I should have or not.
“Thank you, but just this time, I’ll let Maxim enjoy your company exclusively. I have some things to take care of.”
Those two exchanged a few more words. I wasn’t paying attention to what they were saying, instead I pulled out my phone and shot a text to Livy.
*I got it.*I was ecstatic. If those two weren’t here, I might have jumped up and down from excitement. Maybe things would work out after all. Now, if this masquerade ball would pan out, I’d be enroute to cutting ties with my toxic grandparents. Fresh and happy start.
Daniel said his goodbyes and strode away. God, he was certainly good looking. Just as tall as Maxim and there were an equal number of women gazing after both of them. Actually, a better term was drooling.
Instead of taking the same seat as Daniel, opposite of me, he took a seat right next to me.
“I knew you’d get it.”
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach. At this rate, I wouldn’t be able to eat at all.
“Thank you, Maxim.” He would never know how much it meant to me. “I mean it. If it weren’t for you, I’d probably wait another decade before I decided to go for it.”
“No, you wouldn’t have.” His arm rested against my chair, his pant leg brushing against my bare leg. I wore a short, white pencil skirt, combined with a light blue shirt. Now, I debated whether I regretted my choice of wardrobe since the brush of his leg against mine seared my skin. “How are you?”
“Good. Livy is slowly getting herself back together.”
