Alexander wrapped his arms around Livy’s waist and she leaned back into him. Maxim’s father was here too, his usual stoic self.
“Yes,” Livy answered smiling. “What did you do last night?”
“Besides talking to you? Nothing,” I mumbled, heading inside the house with Brandon’s hand in mine.
“You weren’t throwing the car keys of some poor schmuck into a lake?” Alexander mused, recalling the night we ran into him in a club. “And dancing on top of his car.”
"Um no," I retorted in a teasing tone before continuing, "And if I recall, I believe it was your wife that danced on top of your car. I never made it up there.” Truth was, I was too intoxicated to make it up. “You're welcome for that by the way," I added, addressing my brother-in-law.
Maxim and Daniel both laughed. “We have to hear that one.”
Now we were all gathered in the large foyer.
“Oh, it was nothing,” Livy mumbled, embarrassed.
“I ran into Liberty at the nightclub. The three were quite hammered,” Alexander started explaining. “I wouldn’t let them drive home so I took them along. We made a stop on the way and imagine the scene when I came back.”
“Yep, Liberty was dancing on top of the car,” I teased.
“Only because you were too busy throwing that poor driver’s keys into the lake,” Livy defended herself. “And you were too drunk to climb up.”
“Was not,” I answered pretending to be insulted but failing. The smile on my face was ruining it. Yes, there were dark clouds threatening me, but I could appreciate some clear skies too.
“Livy might have a point,” Alexander came to my sister’s defense. “You were sprawled on the hood of my car.”
“Noooo!” I chuckled. “I don’t remember that part.”
Maxim’s stormy blue eyes felt like a caress across my body. It was hard to tear my eyes away from him. Like magnets, they kept shifting back to him. A smile played around his lips, and I wondered if he was thinking about our conversation last night.
One part of me still struggled with taking the leap, scared of being disappointed. Or getting hurt. Maxim could easily be the guy that would make me believe in fairy tales and a happy ending, but then unintentionally smash my heart and leave me standing in the rain.
That was the reason I had a bad track record with men and had no relationships to speak of. I had convinced myself that without an emotional connection, I couldn’t get hurt. But he made me want it all with him. I didn’t just want physical connection, but also emotional. But the question was did he want it too?
“Hello, Layla. How are you today?” There was a mischievous glint in Maxim’s eyes, and I instantly blushed. I didn’t have to wonder what he was thinking about.
“Fine,” I answered, seemingly calm while my heart thundered. I was tempted to glance down to see if it was noticeable on my chest. “You?”
“A tad bit tired,” he replied, still an amused expression on his face. “I was up late texting.” My eyes snapped to him, begging him silently not to say anything. My body hummed with flutters and anticipation.
“What crap are you complaining about?” Daniel chimed in, and I was grateful he interrupted our moment. Until I heard his next words. “I had to be at Revelation till three this morning.”
My spine went rigid, my eyes staring wide at my boss. “Revelation?” My voice trembled and I swallowed hard.
“Daniel owns the club Revelation,” Maxim answered, his tone soothing, but all it accomplished was to set my body in flames. Now I knew I was burning. How was it possible I didn’t know Daniel owned Revelation?
It’s not like I know him that great,I justified myself. I felt panic rising inside me, and I desperately tried to keep myself together.
“Ever heard of it?” Daniel asked.
“Umm, not sure,” I mumbled. I swore the tips of my ears were burning. What the fuck? How was this possible? There was no way this could be a coincidence. What were the odds?
Masked and anonymous ball, my damn ass.
While I debated whether to acknowledge the club or not, Daniel continued. “You should come and check it out one day. And Maxim is being modest actually. He and I are partners in that club. I hope you will consider joining us one day.”
I turned my gaze away from him, aware that my cheeks were burning. Hell, my whole body was burning. Any moment now, I would turn into ashes.Earth, please open and swallow me whole.
Now I was convinced there was no way this was a coincidence. Did they see me? Was Maxim the reason I received the invitation? Oh my God. So much for never knowing who was a member and keeping their privacy. And Luke!Who was he?
