“Okay,” I muttered just to placate him.

“Good,” he replied satisfied. “That is all I ask, that you keep an open mind. If I know my grandson, and I know him very well, he will come for you and won’t give up till he gets what he wants.”

What is that? I would like someone to explain it to me, I thought to myself.

“Where did you want the driver to take you?” he asked.

“Let me call Layla,” Hopefully she was still awake. I needed her company now. I dialed her phone number and let it ring and ring. Just when I was sure she was asleep and wasn’t going to answer, she picked up the phone.

“Hello,” her voice was sleepy.

“Layla, it’s me.”

“Is everything okay?” Her voice alarmed, I heard shuffling in her bed.

“Yes. Are you alone?” I didn’t want to go to her place if she had a man there. I placed a gentle kiss on Brandon’s forehead. Lena would have beaten me for dragging her son through such a disaster.

“Yes, I’m alone.”

“Can Brandon and I stay at your place?”

“Absolutely. Are you sure you are okay?”

“Yes. We’ll be there in twenty minutes. See you then.”

I ended the call and gave Alexander’s grandfather the address. I could have gone to my old place, but I needed company. Having Layla and figuring out all this dad business, we could bear it together.

Brandon stirred in my arms, lifting his head.

“Where are we going, Livy?” His voice was sleepy.

“We’ll stay with Layla for a bit.”

“Is Alexander coming too?” Brandon’s sleepy voice was hopeful.

“No, not this time,” I choked out in a whisper. “He is really busy at work. Go back to sleep.”

“What about Maxim?” he asked, as he drifted off to sleep.

“Yes, we’ll see him in a couple of days.” He loved them and they were a part of his family.

We drove the rest of the way in silence till the driver pulled in front of Layla’s place.

“Liberty,” Alexander’s grandfather’s voice was low, stopping me before I got out of the car. “There isn’t a day that doesn’t go by that I wished my son and your mother could have had their happiness. Don’t throw away the possibility of your own. People make mistakes. Forgiveness is the key.”

As I exited the car, he asked, “Will I see you tomorrow at the publishing company?”

“I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” I murmured. “I’m surprised you even want me there anymore.”

“I do.”

“Alexander and Maxim might not feel that way.”

He chuckled, actually chuckled. “My dear, you are part of our family. They’ll never give you up now.”

Frowning, I wondered what he meant. I should have said no. I should have told him I wanted to cut all ties, but truthfully, I didn’t. It felt good being part of the family. I just nodded and he added, “I’ll send a car to pick you up.”
