Chapter Fourteen

Morning light coming through the open window woke me. Lachlan's hard body was pressed against my back and his warm strong arms were wrapped around me. Blinking my eyes open, I noticed an unfamiliar bedroom. I really hoped we were in his room.

Memories of last night came flooding back. Lachlan was… amazing. I couldn’t even put it into words. My body responded to his like none before him. Even now, feeling his hard body against my back, I felt a tingling between my thighs.

But with a new day, worry crept into my mind. Was I wrong to pull him to me knowing I was such a mess? Although I wanted him something fierce. There were days I felt like my sanity and emotions teetered on the edge, and I lost the strength I had before.

The night Hunter and my son died something broke inside of me. Guilt was eating at me day and night.

The last twenty-four hours were a roller coaster. Heck, the last ten months were a rollercoaster. I was an emotional mess, a disaster waiting to happen for so long. I couldn’t risk pulling Lachlan under with me.

“What are you thinking about?” Lachlan's sleepy voice startled me.

“Nothing,” I whispered.

He leaned forward, his arms wrapped around me, pulling me closer into his body. His lips lightly traced across my shoulder and up my neck. He felt like warm sunshine on a cloudy day and I soaked in it, needing him like a heart needed a beat.

I closed my eyes, relishing his hot breath on the back of my neck, on my skin. It had been so long since I felt wanted. His hands on me were quickly becoming an addiction, and his expert touch branded me as his.

“Don’t hide from me,” he whispered against my skin, right below my ear.

It was a dangerous road for both of us. If I broke again, it would leave disastrous consequences, not just for me but also for him.

With the battle raging inside me, he flipped me onto my back and I felt his lips on mine. His kiss was soft, gentle, and something in my chest fluttered.

“I worry about hurting you,” I murmured against his lips. “There are still issues I have to work out, and I don’t want to drag you through it.”

“I’ll help you work them out,” he replied with conviction. “We’ll do it together.”

At his words, warmth spread through my chest. Hopes and dreams from a lifetime ago kept pushing to come to light.

“I want to go for a jog,” I mumbled against his lips and I gently pushed him.

He pulled away and his eyes were on me pensive.

“Are you ok?” he asked me.

“Yes,” I answered quickly. “I just started jogging again and it’s hard getting back to it. Just want to get into my routine.”

His hand gently trailed down my neck and my collarbone. Of its own will, my body leaned into his touch.

“There is no going back, Eve.”

His voice was deep and possessive. I knew exactly what he meant. After all, he did warn me, several times. But he won’t have to worry about me going back, because as soon as he realizes how damaged I am, he will be the one going back.

His grey eyes watched my every move, my every breath, waiting for my answer. He was a man who always got his way and I knew he won’t give up. Not until he realized I was a lost cause.

“Eve?” He was waiting on my confirmation.

I nodded. “I’m not going back.”

He gently took the nape of my neck and brought me in for a hard and desperate kiss. I wasn’t sure whether it was his desperation or mine that fueled it though. Just as quick as it started, the kiss ended.

“Go for your jog,” he muttered against my lips. “I’ll wait for you and we’ll have breakfast together.”

I left Lachlan in bed, his bed as it turned out. Even before I was dressed in my running clothes, he asked me to stay in his bedroom for the rest of my stay. He had no qualms about moving fast and hard. I got the impression when he knew what he wanted, he went for it with a relentless focus.

The surprising part was that I agreed. Immediately. No questions asked. I should be concerned with the need I felt for him and the power he had over me. In less than twenty-four hours of being in his home, he had me on my back and in his bedroom.
