Chapter Five
The next day I got to work early. I slept soundly all night without any dreams haunting me. I even went for a jog before my morning shower and again made myself eat some food for breakfast.
Colin was already there, startling me since I was unused to seeing him get to the office so early.
“Good morning, Eve,” he smiled in almost a relief.
“Good morning,” I answered. “You’re early.”
His surprised look rested on me.
“Honestly, I was worried whether you’d come today,” he replied. “I couldn’t sleep.”
With a pensive look, I couldn’t help but feel regret for worrying the old man. I caused a lot of grief to my sister and brother-in-law too. It wasn’t right to make so many people lose sleep over me.
Although my mother wasn’t one of those! The thought came and left the same second.
I went straight to work and focused on tasks Colin needed help with, tuning out the world. It was a knock on the door that snapped me out of the spreadsheets.
I glanced up to see Lachlan casually leaning his back against the frame of the door, both his hands in his pockets. Every nerve in my body came alive seeing Lachlan McLaren again. I watched him with wariness, unused to my body responding the way it did. Resemblance between the man in front of me and my husband didn’t seem as intense today; although it was definitely still there.
Lachlan's hair is darker,I noted absentmindedly.
His grey intense gaze, on the other hand, watched me like I sat naked in front of him. I sat up straight, my back stiff, uncomfortable under his gaze. We watched each other silently, both waiting for something.
His eyes sparkled.
“Hello” he greeted me in his deep voice. “Are you having a good morning?”
“Yes,” I answered uncomfortably.
“How was your morning jog?” he asked and I immediately frowned. “Relax,” he added quickly. “I’m not stalking you. I saw you jogging when I was driving to work.”
He stood there, crowding my entire office, and he was only in the doorway, his eyes never wavered from me. I got the distinct feeling he was studying me and when he’s done, he’d know me better than I knew myself.
Hunter never watched me like that.
“You ready?” he broke the silence with his question.
I shook my head, and my hair fell into my eyes. Nervous, I pushed the locks out of my eyes and noticed his stare.
“Ready for what?” I asked uncomfortably, my heart was beating wildly.
“I’d like to lay out our game plan for tracking the return on the investment you recommended,” he replied simply. “I’ll see you in my office in five minutes.”
And just like that, he turned around and left.
Five minutes later, I knocked on his office door.
“Enter,” his sexy deep voice reached me and I walked in. He sat in his chair, leaned casually back, and watched me with those hard grey eyes as I walked to him.
“Hello again,” I greeted him with a slight tremor in my voice.
He motioned for me to sit and I sat opposite of him across his large executive desk.
The silence stretched between us and I glanced around his office, uncomfortable under his gaze. I bit my lower lip, nervous… debating whether I should start the conversation or wait for him.
“We've already implemented your recommendations,” he started in a calm tone. “Do you have any qualms about working on the weekends?”
