Please say yes.
“I won’t be able to make it back for dinner.” My heart sank and a drowning feeling came over me at his response. “I’m sorry, love. I called Ainslee to keep you company. Ok?”
“Ok.” I thought I was broken before, but this felt even worse. There wouldn’t be a single salvageable piece left of me. “Bye, Lachlan.”
I ended the call but couldn’t move, staring at the machine that ended everything so quickly. Each heartbeat was a physical pain.
I wasn’t even sure how long I stood when Ainslee’s chipper voice had me turning away from Lachlan’s office. “Eve, what are you doing there standing like a statue? Hey,” her voice turned worried. “Are you ok? You look pale.”
I shook myself off and took a deep breath as I forced a mile.
“Yes, I’m fine,” I told her and I walked over to her. She hugged me and I returned a hug.
“Nice to see you. What are you doing here?”
She studied me for a second and finally answered. “Lachlan called me. He said he had to work at McLaren and asked if I could keep you company.”
I had to stop myself from scoffing. I glazed over my shoulder at the mantel to check the time.
“Ainslee,” I started, a plan forming in my head. The hell if I would be sitting here doing nothing while he was meeting his ex-girlfriend. “You know how you said we should go out dancing.”
Ainslee’s eyes lit up immediately. “Duh, yeah! How could one forget that?”
“Let’s do it today,” I suggested. “Maybe a few of your girlfriends can join us too? I don’t know anyone else our age but you.”
She jumped on that idea like it was an invention of the century.
“What should we wear?” she asked.
“Something hot,” I told her. “Can I borrow something of yours? I don’t have anything like that here.”
She squealed like a little girl. “I have this brand new dress that would look hot on you. It still has a tag on it.”
“Perfect,” I answered. “Game on.”
Game fucking on. Before we left, I ran upstairs and put my old necklace back on. I needed my armor.
Ainslee drove us to her place where we got ready. She was right, her new dress was hot, sexy, and barely covered anything. The golden shimmer of it went great with my hair color and skin tone. The dress was very short, my back and sides were bare. She even had perfect shoes to go with the dress and luckily we were the same shoe size. Black knee high boots with three inch heels.
I stared at my own reflection. The make up accented my dark eyes and made them look exotic. My porcelain skin was even more prominent with my dark thick hair that came down my back in waves. Ainslee put just a slight blush on my cheeks to accent my high cheekbones.
I looked young, happy, and hot. I felt exactly the opposite but fuck if I’d be wallowing in my sadness while he is reminiscing and doing who knows what with Layla. The thought felt like a knife against my chest, taking away my breath momentarily but I pushed it away.
“Damn, Eve,” Ainslee had me turning away from my reflection. “You look hot. I think those might be similar to the fuck-me boots your sister mentioned before.”
I smiled. “You look hot too.” And she did but she always looked hot. With her vibrant red hair, her green dress that covered even less than mine did, she looked great.
“My girlfriends will meet us there,” she told me. “Let’s go and party.”
