Freaking everything about this male drove me crazy.
I threw myself at him again, this time moving so fast the air whistled past my ears and stung my skin. But his reflexes were unparalleled. He maneuvered away from me, around the towers of books, as if he wasn’t blind at all. I grabbed one of the thick books off a stack and whipped it at him. He snatched it out of the air like Mr. Miyagi grabbing the fly with chopsticks inThe Karate Kid.
Sterling frowned at me as he carefully stowed it on a nearby bookshelf. “That’s no way to treat my darlings.”
Ugh. Ofcourse,he loved books. At this rate, this male was going to make my ovaries explode.
I continued stalking him for what felt like forever. Each time I came close to him, he evaded me, as if he could see my every move with his own two eyes.
I wasn’t keeping track of time, but the moon began to dip in the night sky, making the piles of books cast long shadows that stretched across the room.
My limbs began to grow heavy with fatigue, my chest heaving with my splintered breathing, while Sterling hadn’t broken a sweat. The human side of me wanted to call it a night and snuggle into the vampire prince’s comfy white bed, but the monster in me wouldn’t give up. My vampire instincts wanted to claim the male for myself and wouldn’t be satisfied until I was in that bed, with Sterling buried between my thighs and my fangs buried into the flesh of his throat.
I could practically picture it, his pale skin pebbled with perspiration as he slowly fucked into me, the sensual slide of his Adam’s apple as he swallowed, his eyes clamped to mine like he could see all the darkest fantasies and desires buried deep inside me.
Suddenly, the air was filled with a new scent, something heady and sweet.
And it was coming fromme.
The scent was nothing like I’d ever smelled before, a new aroma that my body was putting off, almost like it was meant specifically for my chosen mate.
Sterling’s nostrils flared, and the muscles in his body tightened. Sweat beaded on his brow, and he let out a heated, masculine groan.
Whatever my body was putting off, it was affecting him, and for the first time since meeting Sterling, I could see him making a visible effort to restrain himself.
“What’s happening?” I asked in a growled whisper.
We began to circle the room, almost moving in unison, slow and steady like an ancient dance that had the steps ingrained in the fabric of my being.
He watched me with intensity, as if he was using every sense available to him. His head tilted as he listened, his nostrils flared, and his tongue frequently ran over his lips to taste the air we shared.
“Fascinating,” he murmured. “I’ve heard of this happening, but I’ve never seen it myself since female half-bloods are so rare.”
“What’s happening?” I asked again as we continued to circle the perimeter of the room, weaving between books.
“Your functioning ovum and your vampiric instincts are co-mingling to create a pheromone to entice your chosen mate.”
“Meaning?”
He licked his lips again, tasting the air for the dozenth time. Then his eyes closed shut for just a moment, and a shaky exhale left his body. I could see he was doing everything he could to stay in control and keep all evidence of his reaction to me off his face.
Aside from his heaving chest and the beads of perspiration soaking into the collar of his sweater, he was doing a good job. With everything north of his waist, that was. His hunger pressed against his sweats, the girth of him pretty damn huge for how lithe he was. A lick of heat tickled my core as I registered the size of it. A girl could seriously hurt herself on that thing.
In spite of his raging erection, he remained cool and collected, his lips pressed into a troubled frown. “Meaning, your womb is fertile, Miss Baxter. And your body is trying to tempt me into claiming you by putting off a powerful pheromone. Similar to a beast in heat.”
A beast in heat. Like an animal, or a monster. In this moment, I felt like one. A fierce huntress with my prey lined up in my sights.
I purred again, crouching low as I prepared to pounce. This time, I dragged the call to my chosen mate out, a low and sultry song meant only for Sterling. “Well,” I hummed. “Is it working?”
Chapter forty-four
Sterling
Sterlingheldmygazewith an emotion burning behind his spectral eyes that made me weak in the knees. He didn’t answer my question, but he didn’t have to. Whatever pheromone my body was putting off to entice this male, it was working. I could tell by the way the prince’s composure began to slip.
And something told me Sterling never lost control.
A dark curiosity filled me, making me burn with a dangerous desire to push him over the edge, where together, we would both topple over into a world I’d never experienced. A world that brimmed with sinful promises, where only we existed.
