All I had to do was convince Sterling that it was a good idea.
And that was going to be the hard part.
Chapter thirty-one
Girl Talk
Theeyesthatwatchedme as I strode through the halls of the Knight Mansion were cold and mean.
Knowing that these vampires could probably scent Corry’s and Vincent’s blood inside me should have been unnerving. Instead, I felt powerful. Almost like it validated my decision to stop running, and accept my role as the half-blood princess.
Though, if Sterling agreed to my plan, I wouldn’t be a half-blood for much longer.
Despite my lack of clothing, I held my head high as I ascended the grand staircase to my bedroom on the second floor.
Word had probably gotten out about their dead king’s bastard daughter. Judging by their faces, I’m not sure what pissed them off more, the Elders’ decision to slap me on the throne, or the fact that they were all probably told that they couldn’t eat me.
When I got to the second floor, I was met with a frigid stare so chilling, there was no way there was a soul behind those eyes.
Lexi.
The beautiful vampiress with midnight black hair was leaning against her door, watching me with all the warmth of an avalanche intent on smothering me.
I forgot that her room was right next to mine. Joy. “Um, hi. You’re Lexi, right?”
She sniffed, her unfriendly, pointed face etched with disgust as she took in my ensemble. “He ripped you out of your clothes? The barbarian.” Her words chastised Vincent but the way she spoke, it was like it was somehow my fault.
“Um, no. We had a run-in with an enemy coven.” I didn’t bother specifying which one. I wasn’t sure how much the princes would want her to know.
The skin around her eyes tightened as she glared at me, like an adult trying to glean a child’s lie. “Right. Well, either way, you’ve had an eventful night.”
“Um, yup.” I stood there for a second, the atmosphere so awkward I began to inch away. “Anyway, I’m going to go get cleaned up—”
“So are you going to marry him?”
I froze in my tracks, gaping at her with naked astonishment. “What? Vincent?”
“Of course. That youngblood isn’t even the same caliber as Prince Feral.”
The way she said ‘youngblood’ you think it was some kind of dirty word. I frowned. “Um, I’m confused. Are you actually wanting me to marry Vincent? Aren’t you two a thing?”
Lexi’s lip curled at me like I was the most ignorant and insignificant person to ever grace her presence.
“This isn’t about us. It’s about who will make a fit king.”
Barf. This Lexi chick had been spending too much time with Feral, that much was obvious. It was weird that she was angry that I was entertaining all my options before settling on Vincent, and even odder yet that she seemed okay with her boyfriend marrying another woman.
It made me uneasy. Like Lexi was tied up with Feral’s plans on being king somehow. And that shit was unsettling as fuck.
I excused myself with a pointed ‘goodnight’ and hurried away to the sanctuary of my bedroom with Lexi’s scrutiny stripping me down to the bone as I scuttled off.
After a satisfying but quick shower, I was standing in front of my armoire contemplating my limited options of outfits to wear to the meeting when someone knocked on my door.
Wrapped up in a towel, I cracked the door and cautiously peered out.
It was a woman I recognized immediately as the human that had fled from Vincent’s room in a fit of tears earlier in the evening. I hadn’t gotten a good look at her then, but I knew her right away from the scent of her blood.
Thanks to Corry’s and Vincent’s blood inside me, she didn’t smell nearly as delicious as she had.
