"Jake, fancy seeing you here," Owen gives him a scowl. I wonder what crawled up his ass and died, but then I spot Fleur Jensen trying to hide behind her sister, Yelena, and Yelena's mate Kylo.
Shit. Jake's sister, Delilah, was Fleur's older brother's mate. Brent Jensen was a piece of shit and died eight years ago, leaving Delilah mateless, thank the goddess. Jake doesn't like that Fleur is his, but we all know he secretly wants her. Bad.
Jake's a good male, but I've never understood his reluctance. Fleur and Yelena are nothing like their brothers were. The two females were abused. It was a blessing for every wolf, especially them, when Cal and Brent were put down like the mangy dogs they were.
I watch those golden eyes grow cold and harden. My dick hardens right along with my mate's expression. Never thought I'd be so attracted to a female's anger, but myQitsukis damn sexy.
Her hands fall away from me, and I have to bite back my pissy growl of displeasure. She turns toward Jake, her eyes flitting over that male as if she is picturing how to dismember him best.
I shift on the balls of my feet, ready to intervene. I don't want to, not after what happened with Greta. I might just have to let Jake take a few licks. Hopefully, myQitsukdoesn't do any permanent damage.
She has him by his throat even before I'm done thinking about it. Her teeth are bared in a grimace, golden eyes coldly calculating.
"Ah, In..." Ezra shifts, moving into position behind my mate.
"Qitsuk, why are you angry with Jake?" I ask her softly. I have a hard time keeping my eyes on hers instead of on the t-shirt that has ridden up, along with the red skirt. Soft skin and the hint of her ass curving in a sweet handful is all on display.
She tosses little Fleur a glance over her shoulder. The young female is shaking, eyes wide with shock.
Jake sees my mate's look as a threat to Fleur."Don't you hurt her!" he croaks. "My mate!"
Qitsuklets him go, a frown of slight confusion crossing her face. Jake stumbles over to Fleur, wrapping her in his arms. "Don't hurt her. She's never hurt anyone, I swear it, Luna!" he babbles.
Shockingly, it's Fleur that pulls away from Jake first. "D-don't," she tells him. "Don't pretend that you care about me now. She's protecting me. She's my Luna. Y-you aren't my m-mate. You said it yourself." Tears start to pour down Fleur's cheeks as Jake stares at her in horror.
"I never said that!" he protests. He'd better talk fast. My cat is eyeing him like he's already dead meat.
"Y-you s-said-"
"-That I didn't want to mate to a Jensen," Jake interjects, cutting off Fleur. "I meant it, Fleur. I would love it if your last name weren't Jensen. That's why I'm going to marry you at the human city hall and change your last name."
There's a pause; an inhale of surprise. Then, the bar erupts. Shouts of congratulations and laughter fill the air as Fleur's mouth drops open in shock.
Jake moves back towards her slowly. "I love you, Fleur," he says to her. "I always have. I'm sorry I was such an ass. You're so young, and I'm sobitterover everything, but I always knew it wasn't your fault."
Fleur sniffles, shaking her head. "It's gonna be some time before I marry or mate you, Jake Rosen." But she's smiling.
"Yes, ma'am," he replies. He takes his mate into his arms again.
I kissQitsuk'sgolden halo of hair nestled on my chest. She's watching the two lovers. Her feelings of peace and happiness wash over me.
"In, there's a problem," Ezra says to me as he looks up from his phone. My brother looks stressed and angry. "It's Elna. She's missing from the clinic."
Qitsuk'shead comes up as I stiffen. "The FeraxMaw prisoners?" Fuck me for forgetting my phone when I shifted.
"Rhet confirms that they're still in the cells. Asher is at the packhouse with them. Lyri and Rhet are headed to the clinic. Thjis is already there. Asher and Mel confirm ourguestsare still in the packhouse, although the brunette female was gone in the downstairs bathroom for ten minutes today."
"I don't like this. Let's get back."
I turn to the watching wolves in the Watering Hole. "Everyone pair up," I tell them grimly. "One paws, one feet. Search for Elna. Keep lines of communication open."
Wolves flow out of the bar. Qitsuk and I join the flow; hands tightly wound together. "Cat, that female from the clinic, the one you blinded a little? She's missing. With war looming, now isn't the time to have a she-wolf disappear."
She looks at me, no panic in her eyes. Her fingers tighten, and she tugs gently towards home.
"I can't, my Bliss," I tell her, feeling miserable that I can't just take my mate home. "I have to go to the packhouse and help."
She frowns but lets me tug her into one of a pack member's SUVs. Her eyes leave me as we sit in the backseat, her eyes focused on the forest as we whizz past. Ezra is in the front seat, still talking to Rhet, relaying information back and forth.
