“But—”
“Shh.” I pressed my finger against her lips. “Let’s get some sleep, and we can figure out our fake past in the morning.”
Her shoulders visibly relaxed, and I moved my finger from her lips to trace the outline of her jaw. She stepped aside so I could take my turn in the bathroom. My cock was so hard from being so close to her, I briefly considered taking care of business on my own. But the threat of her hearing me beat off in the cramped space with her right outside the door prevented that. I brushed my teeth, taking my time to give myself a chance to cool off before I laid down on the floor, just a few feet away from temptation.
When I came out of the bathroom, the only light came from a small sconce next to the bed. The empty bed.
“Abilene?” My first thought was she’d left. But where would she go in a nightgown that left little to the imagination?
“Down here.” She propped her chin up on her fist. “You take the bed. There’s barely enough room down here for me, let alone all of you.”
Hell no, would she subject herself to the hard floor while I enjoyed the bed. “There’s no way you’re sleeping on the floor, sweetheart. Either you get up on this bed right now, or I’ll pick you up and set you down here myself.”
“We can trade off then. I’ll take the floor tonight, and you can have it tomorrow.”
I shook my head. I might wear the bad boy mantle well, but Mama Mae had instilled manners in all of us boys. “No way, sugar.”
“Go to bed, Kane.” She rolled over and pulled the covers up to her chin.
I knelt down, slid my arms underneath her, and hefted her against my chest. “Can’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Stop being so ridiculous.” She struggled, but I held her tight. “Put me down.”
“As you wish.” I dumped her on the bed, prepared to leave her there and take up the spot on the floor.
But her arm snaked around my neck, and she pulled me down on top of her. I caught myself before I squished her underneath me. Hovering over her, my gaze met hers.
I expected to see anger, frustration, even a little bit of rage. But what I saw was even more terrifying. I saw heat. The same kind of heat that burned deep inside me. Before I allowed myself the chance to talk myself out of my next move, I leaned down and touched my lips to hers.

ABILENE
Fire snaked its way through my limbs. Every part of me burned for him. The gentle touch of his lips against mine loosened something deep down inside me. I needed to feel every part of him against me, wanted to lose myself in him in a way I’d never imagined.
Our tongues tangled as he took the kiss deeper. I shoved my hands into his hair while my hips instinctively ground against him. A deep, desperate need threatened to swallow me. I had no idea how to satisfy the empty ache between my legs. My body seemed to know what it needed from him and I gave in, trusting that he’d show me the way.
His muscles rolled as he shifted, nestling his big body between my thighs. Tiny sparks ignited all over my skin, following the trail of his touch. His rough fingers traced a path down my neck, over my shoulder, and grazed the side of my breast.
“Abilene, baby, we need to stop.” He pulled back and touched his forehead against mine. “I told you, I’m not holding you to the deal we made.”
My chest heaved as I sucked in deep breaths. “Whatever’s going on between us isn’t because of some deal.”
His head shook back and forth. “No, I’m not going to take advantage of you, little bird.”
I sensed I was losing him, even though he still hovered over me. “You’re not taking advantage, Kane. I don’t know what’s happening to me, but I know it’s because of you. Because of the way you make me feel. I might have asked you to pretend to be my boyfriend, but there’s nothing fake about what’s going on between us. Show me how good it can be.”
He stared into my eyes, his own eyes a mixture of longing and pain. “How many men have you been with before?”
If I told him he was my first, I had a feeling he’d shut this down fast. But I didn’t want there to be any lies between us. I looked away, not wanting to confirm his suspicions.
His palm brushed the stray strands of hair away from my face. “Have you ever been with a man, sweet thing?”
I took in a shaky breath. “No, but I—”
“Jesus, Abilene.” He rolled off of me and laid on his back with his hands cupped over his face.
“Please don’t stop. I want this.”
