“Will y’all excuse me for a minute?” I pushed back from the table to take the call on the front porch. A few moments later I stepped back into the dining room and my entire world had changed.
“What is it?” Abilene got up to join me. Her hand reached for mine.
Everything inside me had gone numb. “It was about my dad. He just escaped from prison.”
Mama Mae’s hands fluttered to her heart. “Oh, Kane. I’m so sorry.”
“What do you mean?” Abilene squeezed my hand. “How did that happen?”
“I don’t know, but I need to find him.” Rage boiled inside my chest. If the justice system couldn’t give my father the punishment he deserved, I’d dole it out myself. “I’ve got to go.”
“Kane, think about this.” Mama Mae stood, the lines on her face deeper than they’d been just a few minutes before. “Let the authorities do their job.”
I held Abilene’s hand to my lips. “I’m sorry, little bird.”
She shook her head. “Don’t go. Stay with me. I love you.”
My heart cracked wide open at the look of fear in her eyes. “I thought I could change, but not even your love is enough to chase the darkness out of my soul. I told you, I’ve got bad blood.”
“Kane, don’t.” Devin stood up so quickly his chair toppled over behind him. “You’re putting everything at risk.”
“I don’t have a choice.” With the weight of their collective gaze on my back, I made my way to the front door. I might have chosen them as family, but blood was thicker than water. The need to distribute my own brand of justice to the man who’d stolen my mother from me won out.
My bike rumbled to life underneath me as I pulled my helmet on. There was only one place I could think of where my father would go. With my mission in mind, I left the people whose love I couldn’t accept behind and turned south.

Abilene
“We can’t just lethim go. Somebody needs to do something.” I searched the faces of Kane’s brothers.
Devin shook his head. “I don’t know what the hell he’s thinking.”
“He’s not.” Mama Mae slumped into her chair at the head of the table. “Your brother’s reacting. He’ll come to his senses though. Once he realizes what’s at stake.”
I rushed to her side and grabbed hold of her hand. “I hope you’re right.”
“He’s a good man.” She nodded and a bit of color returned to her cheeks. “Go after him and remind him of that.”
“Where?” I’d follow the man I loved to the ends of the earth, but I had no idea where he was headed. “Do you know where he’s going?”
“I think I might.” Devin pulled a set of keys out of the pocket of his jeans.
“Will you take me there?”
He nodded. “We might be able to catch him if we hurry.”
I squeezed Mama Mae’s hand. “I’ll do my best to bring him home to you.”
“I know you will, sugar.”
Devin held the door for me as I rushed outside. “Where do you think he’s going?”
“It’s just a hunch, but I think he might be headed to his mother’s gravesite. We can check there first.”
I climbed into the truck and fastened my seatbelt. “Please hurry.”
The truck fishtailed on the gravel drive as Devin pulled out onto the main road. While he drove, I pulled my phone out of my purse and called Kane. If he was driving, he probably wouldn’t answer, but I had to try. After multiple attempts, I left a voicemail begging him to come back to me.
