I don’t remember anything from that night past my fifth shot.
“I was drunk?”
He hums. “Very, very drunk. So much so you didn’t even balk at me in my wolf form. You just plopped down in the dirt next to me and tried to pet me.”
“Oh God.” I open my eyes and glance at him, but he’s focused on the door.
“It was kind of cute in a should-I-eat-her-or-keep-her sort of way.” He smirks and slides his gaze to meet mine. “So I thought, why not both?”
Rolling my eyes, I try to dig through my memories but that night is a blank space in my head.
“And I asked you to bite me?”
He shakes his head. “No, I started to leave after a while and you begged me to let you come.”
Fuck that visual is pathetic.
“Not my best moment.”
He shrugs. “Your pain was etched across your face, sort of like a permanent cloud lingering over you. I decided to come back when you were eighteen and save you.”
“I didn’t need saving.” It’s impossible to keep my voice calm.
His hands squeeze my calves and he sighs. “You had that same look while you were running, so I bit you so you could come with.”
“I don’t have a look,” I say, glaring at him.
“Not always.”
The door opens, and Everett and Carter burst into the room, breaking up the moment.
“Hey.” Everett sweeps his gaze over me. “Are you okay?”
I nod. “Never better. Honestly, I don’t think I need three caretakers.”
Carter makes a face which says he disagrees, but he doesn’t say it out loud. “Can you tell us what happened last night? Why did you go to the second floor?”
How does one explain that they see dead people? It didn’t go so well for that little boy inThe Sixth Sense.
I lick my lips and glance at Draco, who for some reason seems like the one who will understand. “It’s complicated.”
“How so?” He runs his fingers through his dark hair.
Moving my gaze from him, I glance at the other two. “You’ll think I’m crazy.”
Everett crosses his arms over his chest. “Try me.”
“It’s okay if you don’t want to tell us,” Carter says with a frown. “Though I’m not sure how we can help if you don’t.”
Okay, well, they’re shifters. They turn into wolves. Being able to see the dead shouldn’t bethatmuch of a surprise, right?
“So, you know how people die?”
Stupid question, but I’m trying.
Everett’s face lines with confusion, but Carter nods, encouraging me to continue.
“We all die,” Draco drawls from the end of the bed.
