He glances away. “One does not simply leave Bad Moon Academy.”

“Then what does one do, Carter? Because I’ve been playing along with this whole school bit with the hope that once I pass whatever stupid test I’m being put through, I can leave.” I grip my pencil in my hand.

I can bite him in the ass,Joan offers. They cannot keep us here forever. They may try, but I promise you we will find a way out.

Ignoring Joan, I glare at the side of Carter’s head. “Well?”

His face is full of sorrow when he swings his gaze to meet mine. There’s not an ounce of hope in those hazel eyes. “I can’t say,” he finally says.

“Why not?”

Pinching his eyebrows together as though my questions physically hurt him, he jerks his head. “I. Can’t,” he manages before gasping for air.

Screwing my face up in frustration, I grab his arm. “Is this like the ward? You can’t tell me because of some pack magic?”

He nods then makes a pained noise.

“Can you write it?” I shove the pencil into his hand.

With trembling fingers, he tries to bring the point to the paper but it’s as though something forms a barrier between him and the notebook. He’s panting with effort, and his face is bright red. He’s going to hurt himself trying to tell me.

“Stop,” I say and snatch the pencil from his grasp. His hand thuds to the desk, and he releases a hard breath.

“I’m sorry, Raven.” His eyes crinkle at the edges, and he presses his lips into a thin line.

My chest tightens, stomach churning with unease. “I have to go.” There’s no way I can tell him it’s okay.

There’s no way I can accept I’m stuck here.

There has to be a way out.

Adler still hasn’t come back, but he’s working on finding a solution. If he doesn’t find a way, I’ll have to figure it out myself.

We’ll figure it out together,Joan says softly.

I nod.Yes, together we’ll make them wish they’d never brought us to Bad Moon Academy.

That’s a promise.

Chapter 17

Raven

Someone knocks on my door Sunday evening. I scowl at the door. After a weekend of refusing to socialize, you’d think they’d figure out I want to be left alone. Of course, people taking a hint would be too much to hope for at Bad Moon Academy. Another knock sounds, this one a little louder.

“I don’t want any cookies,” I say and turn back to a book I snagged from the small library on the first floor. It’s a history book detailing the lives of hunters, supes who were way stronger than shifters and vamps, before they went extinct. It’s too bad they’re not still alive because I’d love to give one a ring so they could come rescue me from this fucking hell hole. They sound terrifying and a little psychotic, so I’m not sure they’d be any better than the shifters, but at least I’d be free of the academy and pack ward.

Whoever it is knocks again and I slam the book closed. Calling on some of my supe power—I really should use it more often—I listen to see how many people are out there. I’m not going to open the door to a shifter intervention. I don’t hear any heartbeats or breathing, so I go to pick up the book to start reading again, only there’s another knock.

“What the hell,” I grumble under my breath, shoving off the bed and heading to the door.

Let me know how I can help,Joan says with a sleepy yawn. She’s been sleeping a lot lately. I guess the lack of stimulation has her down, but she can deal for a little while longer.

I open the door, a deep frown pulling at my lips, and take in Carter standing outside my room, waiting for me to answer. “What?” I ask.

Why couldn’t I sense him?

Maybe you did it wrong? Because he’s very much alive and breathing. Next time ask me for help.
