We head into the academy together, and I feel more than a little awkward about my response to his question. I didn’t exactly say no, but I sure as shit didn’t say yes. Everett has something to do, so I stop by the cafeteria for a snack and head up to my room to study a bit before I meet up with Morg.

Slammingthe door closed to my room, I pace back and forth in front of my bed. I almost had her for a second; I could feel it. Her wanting to pursue the connection between us warred with the need for control. Raven’s not ready to accept her fate. Hope still shines brightly in her eyes, as it does with every new student here at Bad Moon Academy. That will all change in another three weeks.

The full moon has a way of shattering dreams and breaking people.

We can’t let it happen to her, my wolf says.

It’s not like we can stop it. Replaying every memory I have of the full moon for him at hyper speed, I begin to break his desire to protect her from the inevitable. We can’t escape it.

He snarls in my head and tries to force a shift, but I’m prepared. He slams against an invisible barrier, trying to rip it to shreds with his sharp teeth. He won’t get through. After a few minutes of trying to escape, he gives up.

Alphas don’t let their people get hurt,he whispers. You’re not worthy of the power I give you.

I’d save her if I could,I say, curling my fingers into fists at my side.

You’re pathetic,he says with a scoff.

Squeezing my head between my hands, I release a frustrated groan. How can I save her when I can’t even save myself? I fucking tried for years and nothing worked.

He doesn’t respond, which only serves to make me angrier.

I pick up the glass from my nightstand and hurl it at the wall, watching it shatter with a scowl.

Everyone breaks.

There’s no changing that.

Chapter 15

Raven

Later that night, Morg knocks on my door. A smile cuts across my face, and I go to let her in.

“I know we said a movie, but I was thinking,” Morg says with a grin, “what about an adventure instead?”

Stepping out of her way so she can come into my room, I close the door behind her and lean against it, narrowing my eyes. “What sort of adventure?”

She walks over to my desk and spins the globe. “Have you seen all of the academy yet?”

“I’ve explored a little,” I say. “Why?” Hopefully she doesn’t want to go to the ballroom. I’d rather save those explorations for myself so I can fall into the memory spheres and not freak her out.

“Well, there’s a crypt and a secret library.” She claps and hops from one foot to the other. “I’ve been dying to take you, but I wanted to give you time to settle in.”

“How many people know about this secret library?”

She ruffles her curls. “None that I know of. Come on, it’s spooky and full of ancient tomes.”

I eye her gym clothes. “I need to change.” I gesture to my jeans and sweater, meant for a cozy night in watching movies, not exploring creepy places. “Give me three minutes.”

“Yes!” She claps her hands. “This is going to be so much fun.”

Grabbing some gym clothes from the dresser, I head to the bathroom. “Joan wants food first,” I call over my shoulder.

“Of course she does. It’s pizza day, so we can grab a few slices.”
