I narrow my eyes. “Wrong answer.TheOfficeorParks and Rec?”
“That is a trick question.”
“Of course it is,” I say with a nod.
“The Officeon the weekends for bingeing andParks and Recduring the week.”
Pursing my lips, I tip my head to the side. “The Officeis the only correct answer to that question.”
“Lesley Knope would disagree.”
I laugh. “Okay, okay. We can still be friends, but I think we need a movie night sometime soon.”
“Absolutely, we need to,” she says with a laugh. “But we only have DVDs. No streaming.”
With a groan, I toss my napkin on my plate. “Of course.”
“Can’t have us accessing the internet. Who knows what awful things we might do?”
I scoff. “Like what? Watching YouTube?”
“Or Pornhub,” she says, winking at me.
“Pornhub in the rec room?”
She shrugs. “Think of it as group therapy.”
“Ugh, that’s so gross.”
“Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it.”
Now she sounds like Joan.
“I’ll take your word for it,” I say. “I have to go to class. I’ll catch up with you this weekend?”
“Movie night tomorrow?” She points a spoonful of mashed potatoes at me.
“Deal.” I grab my tray and drop it off in the dish bin, then head to class.
Carter’s sitting behind the large desk at the front of the classroom. He smiles at me when I enter, and I take a seat somewhere in the middle and wait for the rest of the class.
No one comes.
He taps a finger against his book. “You’re my only student this period.”
“Lucky me,” I say with a grin.
“Come to the front.” He stands, picks up his coffee, and walks around his big desk to sit in one of the smaller ones. His khakis and navy polo shirt are wrinkled. If it weren’t one in the afternoon, I’d think he rolled out of bed and threw on whatever he found on his floor.
Judging from the pile of books on his desk, he’s been lost in research all day.
Grudgingly complying with his request, I move to sit next to him and shoot him a curious look.
“This is unorthodox.”
“This isn’t a regular school.” He grabs the top of my desk and yanks it closer to his.
Oh my. Would you look at those veins?
