My wolf makes a funny noise, almost like a snort.Raven, Luna of the Dead. Hmm. No, that’s not quite right. Raven, Luna of the Corpse.

That’s an awful title.I wrinkle my nose.

I’ll work on it,she says.I’m going to sleep unless you need me.

No, go ahead.

The heavy presence in my mind settles, and I picture her head resting on crossed paws.

I wait for the phantom to come back, but when a few minutes pass and the air around me grows steadily warmer, I lie down and force myself to close my eyes.

Chapter 10

Raven

Sitting in the very back of myVampires in the United Statesclass and avoiding the many curious looks shot my way, I wait for the professor to show up. Unlike Monday’s classes, this one is packed. I notice a few familiar faces I saw wandering around the past two days. Yesterday was uneventful. I stayed in my room for the most part because when I ventured down to breakfast, the cafeteria was deserted. Almost like everyone else had plans and I wasn’t invited. Which is fine by me, I spent the day trying to come up with an escape plan.

I still haven’t figured out how to get around the wards.

A bird-like older woman enters the room, her scowl is sharp enough to cut. She sets her mug on her desk and stands with her hands clasped behind her back, glancing about the room. Her eyes stop on me and her frown deepens.

“There will be no foolishness in this class, is that understood, Raven?”

Narrowing my eyes, I nod.

“I didn’t hear you,” she says, lips puckering like she just sucked on a lemon.

Seriously? Here I thought I’d left all my crabby-ass teachers behind in high school, but alas, assholes are alive and well in the adult world.

“I understand.”

With a purposeful nod, she goes to the chalkboard and writes her name in a neat line. “My name is Ms. Fig. Let’s get started.”

Grabbing one of the memo books and a pencil Carter gave me yesterday from my small bag, I crack the spine—this is only acceptable for these types of notebooks, mind you—and set my pencil at the ready.

“Here’s the basics of what you need to know. Vampires are very sophisticated, perhaps the strongest of supes, and they’re damn good at worming their way into positions of power. Why does this matter?”

A guy up front lifts his hand and waves it around.

“Someone besides Lincoln,” Ms. Fig says with an annoyed edge.

No one offers to help.

Ms. Fig clears her throat and slides her piercing gaze to a woman in the middle of the room, zeroing in on her as if she knew where she was all along.

The lady’s shoulders hunch and it’s not hard to figure out why. Birdface is a bitch.

“Penelope, answer the question.”

“Because it’s only a matter of time before they try to eradicate shifters.”

Ms. Fig tsks. “Shifters?”

“I mean us,” Penelope adds quickly.

The professor’s lips twist into a vicious smile. “Oh that’s right, Raven, you don’t know Penelope yet, do you?”

I shake my head, hating how the other woman remains still in her seat, not a hint of a fight about her. She’s beaten down.
