“How’d you turn out so nice?” I ask, dropping my gaze for a second when he tries to get comfortable. “See, you should bring clothes, then you wouldn’t get bark up your ass.”
He laughs, eyes lighting up. “Next time, I’ll carry some pants. I don’t usually because I typically shift at home.”
“Next time?” I ask.
“Well, I mean, how else am I supposed to know you’re safe?”
Knowing I can see Adler from time to time is appealing. He’s my connection to Aunt Lou and I like the idea of him worrying about me.
“So, have you had any luck figuring out how to get me out?” There’s an edge of desperation to my question.
His eyes soften and he moves one hand to clasp mine. “No, but I’m trying. I’m waiting on a friend.”
“A fae friend?” I glance down at our hands. “It’s kind of hard to take you seriously when you’re naked.”
“Why are you so worried about me being naked?” His amber eyes light with interest.
I shrug. “It’s distracting.”
“Do you want me to leave?”
“No,” I say, grabbing his hand before he can pull away. “Ignore me, stay naked. It’s fine.”
Adler’s eyes darken. “So I can forget about bringing pants because you like me naked?”
He’s fun.
I can’t tell if it’s my thought or my wolf’s, though I guess now we’re one in the same. “Are you trying to fluster me?”
“Is it working?”
“Maybe,” I say with a smirk. “When did you get so flirty?”
He’s always been quieter and more reserved.
My question catches him off guard, and he pulls his hand away. “I’m sorry, that wasn’t appropriate.”
“It’s fine, Adler.”
With a grimace, he stands, careful to keep himself covered and to face toward me so I don’t get an eyeful of ass.
Pity.
“A wolf is coming.” Without warning, he shifts into his other form and takes to the trees.
I watch him disappear into the thicket of leaves and branches. My senses tingle seconds before I hear the thudding of paws on the ground. Adler’s senses must be superior because the wolf hasn’t breached the edge of the forest, and yet he knew someone was coming.
It’s the black wolf.
With a sigh, I stand.I know.
As soon as my supe radar picked him up, I knew who it was.
Let me take control.
Seeing as she hasn’t been out since the night I turned, I don’t have a good reason to deny her. Plus, I don’t want him to sour my good mood.
The pain is small compared to the first shift. One second, I’m standing on two feet and the next there’s a loud ripping sound and I’m on all fours, blinking as my eyes adjust to the enhanced sight.
