Of course he doesn’t. He’s never understood the subtle differences between human courting and shifter courting. I can’t very well haul her into a closet and mark her as mine. She’d probably junk punch me if I tried that.
No. Raven has to be the one to decide. Her luna nature won’t allow for anything else. Draco was right about her. I didn’t sense it that night in the forest, but I can feel her power when she looks at me. Now that she’s not feeling agitated toward me like she did the first day she woke, it’s easier to be in her presence without feeling like I need to bow my head or avert my gaze.
It also helps that she’s not issuing orders.
We haven’t covered the hierarchy within our kind, but she’ll soon discover what a luna is. Knowing how wolves are, hers has probably bragged about her strength already. They’re vain like that.
“Oh god.” She moans when we enter the cafeteria. “I love chicken pesto. Come on, my wolf is being a bitch about me not eating enough.”
“She’s talking to you then?”
Raven shoots her gaze to me before picking up a plate. “Yeah, she finally shook off the wolfsbane and has been pretty active.” She takes three big scoops of the pasta covered in pesto and piles cut up chicken breast on top. “I never thought I’d be one of those people who talk to themselves, but I guess I was wrong. She’s kind of hard to ignore.”
I fill my own tray and move down the line with her. “They’re like that in the beginning. Your next class will help you figure out how to balance without you two overwhelming each other.”
“You know, for a cafeteria, it’s not so bad.” Raven snatches a roll from the bread warmer.
“Yeah, shifters like to eat so we make sure the food is good.”
I glance at the clock on the wall. There’s only about forty minutes until her next class, so I head over to a table and sit. I’m making the most of every moment we have together.
Chapter 9
Raven
Carter has another class to teach, so I head into the next classroom by myself, a little nervous about this one.Controlling the Wolf Insidehas to be an advanced level class. No way can I get a handle onher.
Though I did manage to lock her behind a mental wall for a while, so maybe it’s not as hard as it sounds.
This class has a few more students. There’s a girl who looks about twelve near the back of the room, so I head over and sit a few feet away. The rest of the class is made up of people my age or older. I count twelve in total. One guy sneers at me when I glance in his direction. I bristle and cross my arms over my chest.
He gives me a bad vibe and stares at me like he wants to rip my head off.
He is unworthy,my wolf says.
The young girl peeks at me, sweeping her fine brown hair from her face. “That’s Everett. He’s an alpha.” She purses her dainty lips.
This should probably matter to me, but it doesn’t. I’ve never been good with people who feel like they need to make it known they’re the badass in the room. This sort of behavior draws out my stubbornness and may or may not make me act like an asshole.
What can I say? I love a good battle of the wills.
Swinging my gaze back to Everett, I lift an eyebrow. “You okay over there? Do you need some prune juice?”
A few people snicker.
His face grows red, and his eye twitches. “You think you’re funny?”
“I’m no comedian, but zingers are my jam.”
He growls.
My wolf rises to the challenge and releases an answering snarl.Do not back down. He is not strong enough.
I’m not about to let this douche win,I say to her as I narrow my eyes on him. “You’re messing with the wrong woman. Back. Off.” My words come out with a bite, and the little girl sinks farther into her seat.
I don’t entirely understand the dynamics of what’s happening, but I’m smart enough to know this is a show of power and my wolf isn’t going to mess around when it comes to Everett trying to make a fool of her. Her pride makes me grin, which only serves to make Everett’s frown deepen.
“You’re not even worth my time,” he hisses the words, and yet he doesn’t break eye contact.
