Layla and Morris practically jump out of their seats and rush from the room. Since they started the same week, they’ve taken to each other and stick together. Raven closes her book and caps her pen, flitting her gaze to me when she doesn’t think I’m looking. Our eyes clash, and she smiles.
“You sure do like to talk.” She stands and picks up her things.
I burst out laughing because I didn’t expect her to say that. “And you don’t?” I tease, picking up my satchel and slinging it over my shoulder. “You seemed pretty riveted by my lesson.”
She sighs and walks toward me. “Riveted is such a strong word.”
“You’re right, entranced is probably more fitting.”
“Someone’s full of it.” She laughs and shakes her head. “All joking aside, you are a good teacher, though I’m not sure I understood any of it.”
Adjusting the bag, I lift a shoulder. “It’s a mandatory topic. I promise it gets easier.”
We head out of the room and in the general direction of the cafeteria. I usually eat lunch now, and I can hear her stomach growling.
“Will you eat with me?”
She glances at me. “Is that kosher?”
“Eating?”
With a scoff, she rolls her eyes. “No, eating with your student.”
There are a few people milling about, most have been here for a while. The population of students varies with the number of humans changed in our area. Nothing is predictable, and we try our best to be prepared. Sometimes there are large influxes, like when a wolf goes rogue and decides to attack random people. Other times, they trickle in a few at a time. Shifter society tries to keep the attacks on humans down, but there’s only so much they can do to control wolves, especially when they’re spread out around the world.
Don’t even get me started on lone wolves and the dangers they present.
Once we pass them, I stop walking and face her. “Does it make you uncomfortable?”
“No. It’s just usually when a student and professor are seen together, people assume things.” She bites her lip.
“Do you care what they think?” I ask, tipping my head to the side.
She glances down the hallway. I can’t tell if she’s worried someone will hear or if she’s avoiding my scrutinizing gaze. Raven is quiet for a minute, but her expression changes a few times. She’s talking to her wolf.
That’s a good sign.
Some people fight the second stream of consciousness.
“Well?” I prompt when she leaves me hanging.
“I guess I don’t care.”
I grin and start walking again. “Good, because I was planning on eating with you more than once.”
She shoots me a questioning look which I ignore.
This one is strong. She would bear good pups.
Oh, for fuck’s sake. My wolf stirs in my head, all too intent on studying Raven. He’s noticed my interest, and now he’s taken one in her as well. Which isn’t exactly bad, but it’ll make controlling him a lot harder if he decides he likes her wolf.
Raven brushes her fingers through her hair, misplacing a few strands. I reach over before I can stop myself and tuck the messed-up pieces behind her ear. She inhales and scarlet creeps up her neck.
You should fuck her.
It’s a wonder we haven’t found a mate when you talk like that,I tell him.
She would enjoy herself. You would too. I don’t see the problem.
