Narrowing my eyes, I tip my head to the side, letting some of my hair spill over my shoulder. Is he nervous? He runs this place. Why the heck is he nervous?
“Erron.”
At the sound of Carter’s voice, the headmaster glances up and nods.
“Right, of course. Like I was saying, Bad Moon Academy is a bridge. Once you’ve learned enough to cross the bridge, you’re free to find a home within the pack.”
Hold up. Within the pack?
“I thought I was free to go home.”
Erron releases a nervous chuckle, wringing his hands.
What is happening?
“Well, not exactly.” Erron looks at Carter, so I glance at the professor too.
His forearms rest on the chair, and he’s shaking his head at Erron but stops when he notices my attention.
“Is he all right?” I ask, leaning toward Carter. “He’s rather skittish for being headmaster.”
Erron chokes, and I shoot my gaze to him, furrowing my brow. “I think he’s having a heart attack.”
“I’m not having a heart attack.” He stares into my eyes for a second before turning his attention to a piece of paper. “Raven, you cannot return to your home because you are a shifter now. You’d pose a risk to everyone you love.”
There isn’t an everyone. There’s only Aunt Lou.
For a second, an image of Mom with her hands stuck deep in the dirt of Dad’s grave flickers on the edges of my vision. I take a deep breath, willing the ghosts to leave. It’s been two years since she tried to bring him back then killed herself for failing, and they still haunt me.
“So what? I’m supposed to start over? Thanks to Draco?”
Carter sighs. “The situation is complicated.”
I scoff. “I heard you both in the forest that night. Draco is the one that bit me. Doesn’t seem very complicated to me.”
“You don’t understand.” He shakes his head.
“Then explain it to me.” I tap my finger on the arm of the chair.
Erron coughs, drawing my attention away from Carter. “Here is your schedule.” He shoves the paper he’s been staring at across the desk, avoiding meeting my angry gaze.
How rude. He can’t even look at me. Am I so beneath him?
I snatch the paper off the desk and stare at the schedule.
