“You killed him.”
Ah. All roads lead back to knives.
“He attacked me,” I say, smacking Iris when she tries to roll me over. “Stop fighting.”
Her body relaxes at my hissed warning. Or maybe it was the bright red glow radiating from my eyes that made her listen.
I blink a few times, waiting for the color to fade a bit before looking back at Enoch. “Richard’s enforcer came for me. I did what I had to do to survive. Blaze tried to claim me twice. I gave him a warning. I haven’t seen him since.”
Enoch shoves Zander’s chest, making him stumble back a few steps. “Back up. I’m not going to hurt her.”
Zander charges forward.
“No, Zander.”
My friend stops short and glances at me. His eyes are bright red, eyebrows raised, and his mouth is hanging open. “Demi?”
“Leave him for now. If he tries anything, you can kill him.”
This makes Zander smirk.
“If I agree to help, will you assure me that Blaze will leave me alone?”
Enoch looks at Iris, who shakes her head no.
“No deal.”
Iris gasps. “A small wolf was taken. The ransom for her return was you.”
Secret, secret, I’ve got a secret.
“So that’s why Blaze came for me,” I say to myself more than anyone else. “I’m assuming you want me to trade my life for theirs, if they’re even still alive, did I get that right?”
A car horn blares, reminding me where we are. We’re so exposed.
“Colt.”
He glances at me. “Yes?”
“There’re too many cars.”
Dipping his head in acknowledgement, he sends a message on his phone and twelve seconds later there’s a wall of vampires standing between the traffic and the fallen wolves.
“Where were we?” I ask.
Enoch takes another step closer.
My hackles rise and Evelyn snickers.
“Watch it, wolf. That one’s unstable.”
“You’re one to talk, fang banger.”
She shrugs. “Whatever.”
“We need your help. You are the only hunter who might be willing to help get him and the young wolf back.” Enoch crosses his arms over his naked chest.
Technically so can Zander, but I’m not going to throw him under the bus.
