I lean over her, my hair creating a curtain and blocking her kind and my people from seeing her face. A wolf howls. Apparently they don’t like me dominating Iris.

Tough luck, buttercup.

My gaze is glowing with a dark red haze. I’m walking a line; it would be so easy to break her neck.

I won’t though.

“Do you know how easy it would be for me to kill you?”

She snaps her teeth at me.

Smiling, I lean closer and nuzzle her cheek.

The action shocks her. She goes still.

My lips brush against her ear. “Do you feel your heart pounding? Is your wolf dying to sink her teeth into me?”

Iris growls in warning.

“Mm. I hear your heart’s frantic pitter patter, Iris. You’re not fooling me. You’re scared.”

She doesn’t respond.

“Boo,” I whisper.

Iris flinches and I can’t deny how satisfying it is.

I squeeze her throat harder. She bucks against me and I punch her in the stomach, earning a whimper. “I’m not going to kill you, wolf.”

Sitting up, I turn and look at the guy who held her back. My eyebrows shoot to my hairline when I see Zander holding a dagger to his neck. Evelyn is sitting on a wolf, chin resting on her hand like she’s terribly bored. Colt and Grayson have taken care of the other wolves.

They’re temporarily dead.

Mateo is lying on the ground, the knife still embedded in his chest.

“What’s your name?”

“Enoch,” he says through gritted teeth. “Elder Wolf.”

“Is Blaze dead?”

Zander glares at the guy but Enoch ignores him.

“We don’t know. We cannot scent his trail. Usually when a wolf’s trail fades it is because they’ve carried on to the afterlife.”

I tuck that piece of information away. “What about a witch?”

“We discussed this. Though the logical conclusion was that you killed him. Given your history with wolves, can you blame us for suspecting you?”

My history? What history—oh.

“The wolf who attacked me in the alley?”

He nods. Zander’s knife nicks his neck and blood skates down his throat.

Evelyn sighs like Zander hung the moon.

Right now I don’t have time to worry about her blooming infatuation with my friend.
