She laughs in Mateo’s face. “Please, Brother. We both know who’d win that fight.”

Sighing, Mateo steps away and I uncurl my fingers, reluctantly letting him and the shirt go. “We don’t have time for this.”

He leaves me with his sister and a scowl on my face. Evelyn takes in the look I’m giving his back and nods.

“Yeah, he’s a dick.”

Rolling my eyes, I cross my hands over my chest and tip my head to the side. “You’re stronger than him?”

I’ve never seen Evelyn in action. I know she’s older than Colt and Grayson, but does that mean she’s older—in vampire years—than Mateo too?

She taps her finger against my forehead and I smack her hand away.

“Stronger is so subjective when you’re fighting someone you love, don’t you think? Who’s to say he’s not pulling his punches?”

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Evelyn, master evader.

“That’s not an answer.”

“It’s notnotan answer either.” She gives me a wicked grin full of fang.

“You’re impossible.”

Taking the spot next to me and leaning against the car, she sighs. “Yes, but you love me.”

“You realize you’re exactly like your brother, right?”

Evelyn scoffs. “Please, I’m better.”

I’d like to present exhibit A to the jury.

“Sure you are, cupcake.”

She shoves me and I stumble away from the car, fighting a smile.

“Let’s move out.” Mateo’s commanding tone breaks through the fun and snaps me back to reality.

It’s seven and we’re initiating phase one of the plan.

Soon enough we’ll have Alissa, Lacey, and my parents back.
