Chapter Nine
Demi
“These seats are awfully uncomfortable. Couldn’t you have chartered the black jet instead?” Evelyn brushes her hair over her shoulder.
She’s sitting across from me and Grayson. Colt’s next to Mateo, going over the logistics of our attack on the way to New York City. There are a few more vampires with us, sitting in a row behind me. Most of the team is already on the ground and prepping.
“Deal with it, Evelyn, there are more important things happening than your ass being uncomfortable in a private jet.” Mateo gives her a pointed look from across the aisle.
Grayson grins at me and shakes his head. Is it me or is Evelyn’s M.O. acting like a diva?
She pouts and taps her long, blood red nails on the arm of the chair. “You’re in a mood, Brother.”
His eyes darken. “Leave it.”
Sighing, she turns to face me. “How’s X?”
I shrug. “About as well as can be expected. It’s only been a day.”
Leaving her and Zander behind was a hard decision, but it was the only way I can keep them safe. At least in the Blood Mafia tower they’re not at risk of being attacked. They’ll be safe there.
Mateo even stationed a few vampires outside of their room. I’ve never gotten a complete headcount of his legion, but with the crew we’ve taken with us, I counted around twenty vampires left. That’s not including any I missed when I checked the gym, restaurant, and nightclub.
They have plenty of protection.
“And Zander? How’s he coping with the loss?”
“About the same, why?” I narrow my eyes, not trusting her motives.
Evelyn’s never really struck me as the caring type.
She leans forward and grips my knee with her hand, digging her sharp nails into my skin through my pants. “Am I not allowed to ask about my friend’s friends?”
For Odin’s sake, she’s legitimately insane.
Shoving her hand off, I cross my legs. “You can ask, but I’m not surewhyyou care how Zander is doing.”
A hint of mirth flashes in her brown eyes. “I like the hunter. He’s sweet.”
“Evelyn, leave it alone.”
She hisses at Mateo. “No one asked for your input, Brother.”
“I told you to leave him alone.”
Glancing at me and Grayson, she furrows her brow. “Can you remind me when I gave him permission to dictate what I do?”
Grayson grimaces and looks away. He’s not going to get caught between Mateo and Evelyn.
“Coward,” she whispers before looking at me. “Do you have a problem with me pursuing Zander?”
Short answer: Maybe.
Long answer: Possibly if she decides to lose her shit and kill him because she’s an unstable vampire who occasionally looks capable of mass murder.
But hey, I’m also a little unstable so who am I to hold her back?
“If you hurt him, I’ll kill you.”
