The other three demons hiss and screech, trying to break away from their fights with our group to run away. They’re too slow because four large scorpions crash through the forest, knocking over trees in their wake.

The blood demons and my friends back away from them and rush toward the house.

“I’ll get X,” Maria calls.

She and Mateo run inside the house. Leaving me with Nix.

Her fist connects with my ribs, cracking more than one. A sharp rush of air escapes my mouth.

“You. Will. Die. Here,” she says between haggard breaths.

“Not before you.” I grab the last knife from my thigh strap and jam it between her ribs, shoving it deep inside her until it hits her heart.

The grip she has on my injured leg falls slack. I remove my hand from her neck and set to the gruesome task of severing her head from her body.

This bitch isn’t coming back.

Evelyn shouts my name.

I finish ripping Nix’s head free, wincing when my side smarts, and spin around to see what’s the matter. Kerberos and Blaze are shifted, snarling and snapping their teeth at the scorpions.

Fuck.
