Chapter Nineteen

Mateo

I reach Blaze first. Grayson went to tell Demi, and Colt is busy with a new squadron of soldiers. Being a one-man greeting committee doesn’t bother me. I have a few things I’d like to say to the wolf anyway.

Shoving through the glass doors, I button my suit jacket and head straight to the wolf. Blaze is leaning against a dark blue SUV, his arms are crossed and his face is set in a scowl so fierce I’m sure it hurts.

“Blaze.”

“Mateo.” He tips his head to the side and his nose twitches. “You have humans inside?”

Narrowing my eyes, I cross my arms. “We have feeders on premises, yes.”

Since Nix killed all of the other feeders, we’ve been slow to rebuild our staff. Despite the risk of death, there are still weak humans willing to give their vein for the rush.

He hums. “These don’t smell like feeders.”

I’m sure he means Demi’s parents. I ignore his prodding statement and enter his space.

“I saw the way you looked at Evelyn, wolf. If you so much as think about her, I will rip your throat out.”

Blaze growls and his eyes begin to glow. “Threatening me when I offered your little mate my assistance?”

Grinding my jaw, I place my palm on his chest and shove his upper body into the car. “You owed her a debt, that has nothing to do with me. Leave Evelyn alone.”

He struggles for control of his wolf; his fingers shift back and forth from digit to claw. His arms ripple with fur, only for the fur to disappear when he wrangles his wolf into submission.

It’s as I suspected. He took a liking to Evelyn the night we came back from saving him. My sister has attracted the wrong sort of attention her whole life. I’ll be damned if he makes a move on her.

Demi’s spicy scent hits my nose. I move away from Blaze, giving him a cold stare he has to glance away from.

He isn’t strong enough to challenge me and he knows it.

“Do you understand?”

Gritting his teeth, he spits out the wordyesas Demi comes to stand between us.

She gives him her back and scowls at me. “What are you doing?”

“Giving Blaze a friendly warning.”

“It didn’t sound or look friendly to me.” Demi crosses her arms. “He’s here to help, don’t mess it up.”

I shake my head. “I wouldn’t. Blaze’s debt is to you, not me. He cannot go back on his offer.”

Glancing at him over her shoulder, she holds his glowing gaze. “Is that true?”

Blaze dips his head. “Yes.”

“You’re lucky,” she says to me, swinging her eyes to mine. “No more macho bullshit, okay? We’re here to help X. Evelyn’s love life can wait.”

“Oh, I very much disagree.”

Speak of the devil. Evelyn saunters over in a ridiculous dress that reveals far too much leg for my liking.

Blaze forcefully pulls his eyes from her, but not before they rake over her.

“Mateo, what did I tell you about scaring off my friends?” My sister pins me with a scathing glare. Her lip curls back as she releases a low hiss.
