“Zander’s doing good.”
Evelyn rolls to face me. “Mmhmm. He’s mighty fine, that one.”
I hold a finger and shake it. “Stop, no more. I can’t bear to hear you talk about how sexy he is.”
“Well too bad, if I have to watch you suck face with my brother, you can listen to me talk about your friend.”
“Ugh, fine.”
“Did I tell you about his sweatpants?” she whispers the question and grabs my arm, shaking me. “The outline of the thing, I mean, mygodwho was his father and how can I thank him?”
I snort and cover my eyes with my arm. “Why me?”
She continues, not caring how uncomfortable I am thinking about Zander’s junk.
I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Evelyn comeswith me to find Alissa. The vampire is in the gym, as per usual, and gives a little wave when we walk in. I should work out today, but I’m not feeling up to it. We wait while she finishes with her client.
“Hey,” she says after taking a sip of red-tinged water.
Nothing like a little bloody water to refresh you after an intense gym session.
“How long are you working?” I ask, checking out the other vampires in the gym. I spot a familiar mop of curly brown hair the same moment Evelyn does.
She flashes from my side.
I sigh. “Of course.”
Alissa waggles her eyebrows at me then turns to watch Evelyn sneak up on Zander, or at least, she tries to.
Before she can jump on his back, Zander spins and slams the staff he’s wielding into her gut. His face morphs from irritation to surprise and finally to regret.
“Evelyn. Shit. I’m so sorry!”
Evelyn clutches her stomach and her body shakes as she wheezes. He must have really hurt her. I start to head over but stop when I hear her maniacal laughter.
“She’s crazy,” Alissa says.
Shaking my head, I watch Evelyn stand with ease and prowl toward Zander. His gulp is audible from here.
It seems the cat caught the canary, but this bird doesn’t look too upset by it. I think he’s enjoying her attention.
Turning away from the scene, I glance at the clock. It’s ten-thirty in the morning. My phone is in my pocket with the ringer volume set on high. Blaze has yet to call.
“Right, we should leave them be for a while. What’s next for you?”
Alissa tips her head to the side. “I have a meeting with the boss now. There’s a new job.”
Do I want to go sit in on her meeting with Mateo? Hell yes. I’m dying for something to do other than wandering around and trying to fill my time. I can be useful.
“Can I come?”
She lifts a blonde eyebrow. “Do you have to ask permission? Aren’t you la jefa?”
“Please, Mateo would never give me the title.”
