My gaze flits over the lines of concern on her face, and I shake my head. “I’m good.”

“You’re sure?”

I nod. “Yeah, some of these are from Colt yesterday.”

Her eyes narrow, and she lifts her hand to adjust her platinum blonde ponytail. How is it we fought for nearly fifty minutes and she still looks fresh?

Fucking vampires.

“Don’t let him hurt you, Demi.”

I pause at the fiercely spoken words. Alissa’s intentions seem genuine, and she talks as though we’ve been friends for ages. I’m hesitant to trust her, but I have no one. Lexi isn’t here, I don’t have a way to call her, and even if I did, what would I say?

I need a friend.

“I won’t. Trust me, Colt’s going to regret ever laying his hands on me.” I rub my arm over my forehead, only managing to smear more sweat across my skin. “Ugh, I need a shower.”

Alissa laughs. “Yeah, you look disgusting.”

I scowl at her. “Some of us aren’t vampires, bitch.”

“Well excuse me for being amazing. Besides, it’s not like I chose to become a vampire, Demi.” Her tone is sarcastic, leading me to believe she’s come to terms with being turned against her will.

“Shit, sorry,” I say reflexively.

She yanks my gloves off. “It’s not a big deal. . . at least not anymore. Seriously, don’t sweat it.” Her nose wrinkles. “Maybe I should have said don’t worry about it, you’re drenched.”

A smile tugs at my lips. I am. “Thanks for being nice.”

Alissa stands and holds her hand out to me. “Like I said, unlike some vampires, I keep my promises. Do you want to work out again tomorrow?”

I grimace and slap my hand into hers. “If I can walk, sure.” Then I think for a moment as she tugs me up. “I don’t want to slow you down.”

She waves off my concern. “It’s a nice change of pace, besides, I enjoy helping.”

I wrinkle my brow as we climb out of the ring and walk toward the exit. “Have you trained before?”

“You’d be my first human client, but yeah, I train the new recruits.”

Hm. Interesting. Working out with her will be a lot more beneficial than getting creamed by Colt. “Yeah, same time?”

“Works for me, see you later, Demi.”

Alissa and I go our separate ways. When I get into my apartment, I chug an entire bottle of water before showering without interruption from an infuriating vampire.

All in all, today is a good day. I made a friend and I haven’t had any creepy comments from Mateo and his speaker.

There’s still time for everything to go to shit, though.

Chapter Twenty-One

Demi

When dinner rolls around and I still haven’t seen Grayson or Colt, I start to get irritated. I don’twantto see them, but I’m bored and the shows on the TV are only entertaining for so long. Books are so much better, but I don’t have any here and Mateo hasn’t spoken to me yet, so I doubt he’s ready to continue where he left off.

Did he tell Colt and Grayson to stay away? I remember him telling them they’re not allowed to touch me but that doesn’t extend to them coming to see me, does it?

I have no intention of letting Mateo’s growly warnings stop me from taking what I want from Colt and Grayson. They’ve made it clear they’re interested and I’m not ashamed to use them or their supernatural dicks to get off.
