“Spoiled?”

“Do you like cottage cheese?”

“Sometimes.” I take a drink of my water, eyeing him over the top of the glass.

His blue eyes are patient and kind. “It’s similar to that. The taste is different, but not necessarily bad if mixed properly with other ingredients.”

“I’ll take your word for it,” I say after setting my cup down. “Can I go back to my room now?”

“Sure, let’s go.”

“How was it?” Colt asks when I find him later in the study reading a book.

“About as well as can be expected, she’s not going to be easily wooed.”

He snaps the book closed and drops it on his lap. “Could it be you’re not as charming as you think?”

I laugh. “I am charming. Demi’s going to need time to soften up.”

Colt smiles darkly at me.

“Sleeping with her right away won’t win her over, Colt.”

“No, but she’ll have one hell of a time, and I’m certain she’ll want more.” He strokes his chin.

“You can try, but don’t cry to me when she slams the door on your face.”

Colt laughs. “One meal with her and you suddenly have her figured out?”

I sigh. “No, I haven’t the faintest idea what makes that woman tick, but all women are the same and good sex will only get you so far.”

“We’ll see.” Colt stands and places his book back on the shelf, sliding it into its rightful spot.

Chapter Sixteen

Demi

My bedroom is pitch black when I wake from a horrible dream. I rub my palms over my eyes, trying to erase the gruesome images of the alpha being gutted by his pack mate. A heavy sigh escapes my lips, sleep is a far-off hope now. I roll onto my side, pulling the soft sheet and comforter with me.

A figure stands near the window, leaning casually against the wall. I stiffen, then reach for the bedside lamp.

“Don’t.”

His voice is much smoother and deeper in person, rolling over my skin and slithering into my ears.

Mateo.

I hesitate, keeping my hand half extended and ask, “What are you doing here?”

His form shifts in the dark room. “How do you like your room?”

“It’s great, thanks for kidnapping me. This is always how I imagined my life would go.”

“Demetria, it was us or them. If the alpha got ahold of you, you know what would have happened.”

I drop my arm to the bed. “You were going to kill me too, Mateo.” I spit out his name, hating the vile taste it leaves in its wake.
