I start to glare at him but notice how close the other vampires have gotten. All four of them stare at me with black clouding their eyes. Their fangs are on full display. I smack my hand over the largest wound from the vest and press back against the car.

Colt stands and steps in front of me. He shifts his weight slightly forward and crouches. “Get in the car, Demi.”

I don’t argue because I’m at least a little keen on what’s going on. My blood has set off their vamp hunger, and I’m an easy snack. Human and weak despite being able to stab them. The knife isn’t on me, so I have no way to defend myself. At least not effectively.

I grapple with the driver’s side handle and crawl into the seat once I get it open. Pressing the lock button once I’m inside doesn’t do much to make me feel secure seeing as there are no windows and they have supe strength.

The parking lot is empty when I check; not a wolf in sight. They must have split once the silver started flying. Semi-confident that the only threat to me is the blood suckers, I turn my attention to them.

His voice is muffled, but Colt’s muttering something to the hungry vampires. They don’t seem to like what they hear because they rush toward him. Colt may be a badass, but four against one is not good odds. Even for the best of fighters.

When he moves, it’s like raging water over rapids. Fast and violent. He rips one of the males’ heads clear off, tossing it aside before he disembowels another. I cover my mouth with my hand, stupefied by the scene playing out in front of me.

Colt isn’t messing around and, in another minute, the other two vampires are mutilated, no longer a threat to me and my human blood.

“Holy shit,” I whisper when he flings the body of the last vampire across the parking lot and it crashes into the brick wall of a building.

Grayson springs up from the ground, making me scream in surprise. He shoots a sassy smile my way before going to Colt.

Stupid vampire.

They stand outside the vehicle, talking and gesturing wildly. I’m not the stealthiest eavesdropper, and they probably know I’m listening. I don’t care and neither do they because they continue to yell.

Colt killed four vampires for wanting to suck my blood. Grayson killed the female for turning the bomb on.

“Holy shit.” My words are barely a whisper.

Grayson

Being hit by the silver is nothing compared to the irritation flaring inside of me. In between the time I passed out and woke, Colt murdered our squad.

I killed Shelly for being stupid enough to act before given a direct command from Colt. He’s the captain and his orders are the only ones the squad follows.

“What the hell did you do?”

Colt glares at me, chest heaving. “They were going to fight me to get to her.”

“So you kill them all?”

He shrugs. “They’ll heal. . . well. Maybe not Royce, but the other three will.”

I glance at the bottom half of Royce’s body and jab my finger in its direction. “Mateo will not be happy about this.”

Colt growls. “Well, he wouldn’t have been happy about me letting them slaughter her.”

Demi’s listening with rapt attention when I shoot a look over my shoulder to check on her. I groan because she’s nosy, but it doesn’t stop me from berating Colt.

“We lost five of our squad tonight, Colt. Five of them. Who do you think Mateo is going to blame?”

Colt clenches his jaw because he knows. It won’t be us that bears the brunt of his anger.

“You tasted her.”

“Screw you.”

I laugh. “Mateo will know. You can’t hide from him. He’ll sense your desires. You know better than to feed from her directly.”

He grimaces. “I didn’t have a choice.”
