He rolls his eyes and points to the table. “Not so fast, now you have to reload.”

I groan but hurry to load up another magazine, whistling while I slip bullet after bullet into it.

“You’re terrifying for a human, you know that, right?”

Shooting him a wink over my shoulder, I laugh. “I’m not human though, remember?”

“True,” he says, eyes searching mine. “Still, for someone who grew up thinking she was human, you have a strong proclivity towards violence.”

“I just like the adrenaline.”

I turn back to the magazine and finish loading it. I insert it and let the slide drop, flashing my teeth in a wolfish smile when I get it loaded all on my own.

“Maybe,” he mutters in a way that tells me he doesn’t believe me for one second.

Tough luck, buttercup.

“Hold up, wait a minute, it’s a chopper.”

Colt pinches the bridge of his nose. “This was a mistake.”

“Oh, no, no, no. Too late now, buddy. You’ve unleashed the beast.” I saunter over to the window, taking care with the gun, and find my stance. “Stop looking at my ass,” I say then shimmy slightly.

He lets out a harsh breath, and I bite back another smile.

Sucker.

Two more days pass. The gym has been oddly empty and my sessions with Colt in the shooting range are as well. Alissa, Evelyn, and I eat at the restaurant one night, which is also strangely slow during the usual dinner rush.

Mateo’s been absent too. Grayson said he’d remain behind, but I don’t think he did. If he had, he wouldn’t have been able to resist taunting me through his little speaker or perving on me while I shower. Oddly enough, I miss the short, civil conversations and listening to him read me his favorite story.

Somethings going on, I sense it in the air.

Evelyn bursts into my apartment, hauling Alissa in after her, and interrupting the theories that have been circling around in my mind.

“Hello, sure, come on in. Do you want some water? No? That’s no problem. I’m sorry I don’t have any blood for you, will you be okay? Of course, no worries. Thanks so much for stopping by, toodaloo.”

Alissa’s eyes crinkle when I’m done. “Toodaloo? Really?”

I drop my legs to the side of the couch and sit, leaning back against the pillows. “What do you want?”

They’re both scantily clad in short dresses and high heels. Alissa’s light hair is piled on top of her head in a fancy braid bun thing, and Evelyn’s dark locks hang in long, loose curls.

Evelyn simpers at my manners. “Well, Alissa and I thought you might like to go to a club, but I guess we were wrong. Let’s go, Alissa.”

“Wait,” I call when they turn to leave. “What kind of club?”

Evelyn quirks an eyebrow at me over her shoulder. “Twisted Helix. The hottest club in San Francisco, darling.”

I look at Alissa. “You trust her?”

Alissa shrugs. “Evelyn and I have a long history. We didn’t always get along, but we’ve come to like one another over the past fifty years. She’s all right.”

Evelyn scoffs and whispersall rightin indignation. Alissa ignores her and juts her chin toward my bedroom.

“Get dressed, wear something hot.”

I laugh. “Does Mateo know about this?”
