He went out onto the back patio and realized things were pretty exposed back there with the alleyway and he’d not placed any cameras. Before he left, that would be one thing he would rectify. There were a couple perfect places and nobody would notice them. He might even convince her a privacy fence wouldn’t be a bad idea either.

After starting the grill, he couldn’t stop thinking about the openness of the back yard so he went around the side of the house and got some additional equipment and wire from his truck. The garage was one car attached but there was a path along the side of the house that led to the back yard so if he positioned it correctly, he would get that entire path along with most of the back yard. Another camera in the same general place on the other side of the yard would cover the opposite side of the house. He’d gotten so side-tracked with hooking everything up he didn’t hear Brooklyn come up behind him.

“Hey, are you ready for those steaks?”

“Holy shit, I didn’t hear you coming. Yeah, I can finish this later.”

“Did you have more work to do?”

“Not much, just decided your back yard could use a few cameras too.”

Hopefully her landlord wouldn’t have a problem with it. Only makes the tenants feel that much safer.

“Oh, that’s a good idea. It’s really a good-sized yard. Maybe I should get a dog.”

“That’s not a bad choice either, they are good protection. I have a German Shepherd and he’s really a good guard dog. He hears every noise.”

When he put his tool belt down at the edge of the back patio, she held out the pan with the steaks, and a few different bottles of seasoning.

“How do you like yours cooked?”

She wrinkled up her nose.

“Well done please. No pink on the inside. But also, not burnt.”

“You’re in luck, that’s how I like mine too.”

“Perfect, I’ve got the potatoes almost done and I just fried up some asparagus with a mild parmesan cheese sauce. Hope you like vegetables.”

“Sounds amazing Brooklyn, I can’t wait to eat.”

She smiled and lingered a few seconds before walking away. She really was beautiful. It was unfortunate what had happened to her. It made her wary and constantly on guard but it also made her scared and that fear is what brought out his protective side. Even more now that he’s gotten to meet her. He’d like to learn more about her, even if he probably shouldn’t.
